Triage-How is it done in your ER?
I was just wondering how other ERs triage. We are having a little conflict at work.....so how does everyones triage process work? What determines which patient is seen first? I will fill in the details later....just want to see how it works in other places. Thanks!

These two idiots need to have their nursing licenses revoked
Wow! This makes me sick....what a sad shape our world is in.

From experience, has anyone had a relatively low stress nursing job ?
I went from the ER to OPS/PACU . It was a breeze. no stress, weekends or holidays. I absolutely hated it, and was bored out of my mind. I am now back in the stressful, fast paced crazy environment I love..ER, and I will never leave again!

I confess...I'm a nurse who doesn't want to work in a hospital again
My daughter was just saying something along these lines today, and like you feeling guilty! I told her never stay in a job or profession that makes you miserable.....if you have an opportunity do something different. As for me I cannot see myself doing anything other than Emergency Nursing.....I love it!

ACLS Heartcode via AHA?
At my hospital it can only be used for re-certification, and first timers still have to do the class. I did like a lot of you..I was really looking for drugs that I wanted to give, and had no option! It has a few gliches, but I did enjoy it, and I learn much better this way! We also do BLS, and PALS like this too.

Vent: Why I won't accompany my mother to the ER anymore
I laughed out loud when I read your post!!! I could just picture the whole thing! I was just in the ER (not mine) this weekend with a family member, and I warned my hubby....do not mention that I am a NURSE!!!! They did a really good job taking care of my family member and I tried to keep my mouth shut except for please, and thank you!

At what age do you plan on retiring from nursing?
I will be 56 in a few days. My hubby and I are thinking somewhere between 59 1/2 - 62. We have tried to invest & plan....and will have no debt. I don't know if I will be ready to stop working or not.....and I worry we won't have enough money. Hubby on the other hand says we will be fine!

Patient abuse
"i witnessed a nursing supervisor physically abuse a patient. while i have seen abuse before, this rose to a level at which i think the supervisor should face charges in court for assault. it was that bad. that supervisor's judgment is atrocious". this to me says it all...i don't care if i had been an employee for 16 years, or 6 weeks....i would report to any and all that i could report to, and i would have called the police to boot!. i hope you do what you need to so that this piece of crap can never hurt anyone else again. i would also take one of the other job offers asap.

Is med-surg a must? Not wanting to get pidgeon-holed..
I guess that different with each person....for me it was the right thing to do. I learned so much, and would do it the same way again. I did not stay in MS, but what I learned has served me well.

Shoes. Yes. Shoes.
Asics, Nike, Crocs. I have a lot of shoes, and switch every day usually.

Or does anyone have any advice on how to make a miserable job work?
I agree if you are miserable its time to move on. It is not fair to you or your patients. I wish you much luck, and hope you find a position that makes you happy. Kinda like the saying....If you love your job...you'll never work a day in your life!

Laying off everyone
No lay offs, but a lot of low census. We have had one wing closed for a couple of weeks. In staff meetings we are urged to come up with money saving ideas, and told we are seriously in the red. On the other hand we have a huge addition currently under way...:uhoh21:

Lazy techs!!!!!
With so many people out of work....that will work....why tolerate lazy from anyone? This is a pet peeve of mine, and I have no tolerance for lazy people regardless of their title.

too old to go into E.D.?
I am 55 recently switched to another area from ER....I am miserable. I thought the schedule in the new area would be worth the change....I am bored to death and will be going back asap! I don't see it as an age issue, but a work ethic issue. I see so many that are just plain lazy of all ages. So if you don't mind hard, fast paced work go for it! I work 12s...3 one week, four the next...no problem. The LPNs in my ER work fast track. They are required to have ACLS, and PALS. BTW...an LPN from the ER was just honored as nurse of the year at my hospital.
