Has any nurse ever been on "temporary" disability?

Post your "story"-- whether it's got a "happy" ending or not. Thanks.

My mom is an nurse & had to go on temp. disability in 2007 due to a car accident. The hospital she works at paid her half of her regular salary, and when she finally settled her case with the person responsible for the accident (which was just last month), the hospital is now asking for the money they paid her back.

at where i used to work, they would put women on temporary disability when they were out for "maternity leave". so, yes. i have been on temporary disability.

Anyone ever go on "temporary disability" because of an on-the-job injury?

I was on temporary disability from my nursing job once many years ago because of a bad case of viral pneumonia that dragged on for a long time (~3 months, before I was close to "normal" again). No problems from my employer, and I returned to work without difficulty when I recovered sufficiently to be able to function at work.

I'd been out of work since last March on long term disability that kicked in after my FMLA was up. The LTD was a benefit from the hospital. It paid roughly half what I used to make, but then I had to pay almost $1200 for COBRA when I was used to paying less than $400 for the same insurance policy.

Did she get the full pay for every day she missed from work in the settlement?! Not too familiar with this but I'd check the legality of them collecting back the money she was paid especially if she wasn't fully paid for every day missed in the settlement. Did she sign any contract to pay the hospital back or is there anything in writing about this being company policy?! Did they make this request in writing?! She should call her lawyer and forward them the letter. I wouldn't pay until the lawyer said to do so. This seems a little fishy. I know your insurance company can recoup in a lawsuit but your lawyer would work that number into the settlement and that money gets paid directly to the insurance company. Keep us posted.

I worked at a factory in Southern California from 2001 to 2004.

I went on temporary disability in mid-2004 due to stress leave. Without going into too many details, I will divulge that a supervisor was stressing me out badly to the point that I was displaying physical symptoms and had trouble sleeping. The state of California sent me a disability check monthly that amounted to 2/3 of my gross pay, and short-term disability insurance paid the other 1/3.

This temporary disability lasted 2 months before I ended up resigning from the company. My next move was to enroll in an LVN program.

I was on disability after a car accident for 6 months back in the mid 1990's. I went back to work but left eventually from a floor job to telephonic nurse as it became obvious I wanted to have a nursing skill that was not dependent on traditional endurance needs.

I'm pretty sure the hospital has already been given their money back. Before she received the settlement check, the lawyer took his share & then paid off some of the outstanding bills, and I think the hospital put a lien on the settlement. I know before she took short term disability, she was using some of her PTO.

Thank you for all your information! :wink2:
