When I was a young newlywed, more than 30 yrs ago, my husband gave me a microwave for christmas. We were young. I was still young enough to want lingerie, jewelry, perfume.... But my husband bought me a kitchen appliance. I even cried. There began a long line of gifts for me, that my husband really wanted for himself. He's never gone so far as to buy me a power tool, but it's been close.
It still makes me sad after all these years.
At the time, microwaves were pretty cool things. Alot more expensive than they are now. It was a pricey gift for us. But I would have felt alot better if he'd just put his name on the box, and bought me something pretty.
The flip side of being disappointed, is also feeling ungrateful. It was not a merry Christmas that year.

This year will be my hardest year thus far. In pursuit of adventure, I took a new job in a new state far, far away, and I will be unable to make it to the place where I grew up to see my family this Christmas. My furniture, electronics (except my laptop), etc. are not arriving until after Christmas, so I will be with my cat on a blow-up mattress just passing the time. I'll be laughing about it by next Christmas.

My husband's parents and much of his family lives 10 hours north of here. His sister, aunts/uncles and some cousins live down here...and everyone is heading up north on Sunday to spend Christmas together. My husband can't get time off work, so we have to stay here. We will be seeing my family, which is nice...but we can see them anytime. I was really hoping to go up this year...and it really sucks seeing everyone else packing up to head up there...and we're the only ones left behind.
Oh well...I'll try to make the best of it.

Geez...short of being given power tools or a blow up doll, Id be happy with whatever I got! Why do we feel so darned entitled now?! Christmas is about family, not about the 'pretty things' you get from people....SMH...

my husband got me a mixer one year, i dont even bake. The next year I wrapped it up and gave it back to him. Its been 28 years and it just twirled its last beat, we laughed about it and threw it away.

This year I will be lucky enough to have the day off of work. My boyfriend however, has to work that night from 11p-7a. It won't be so bad because he's off during the day but will have to sleep at some point. I live in Florida and my children will be in Ohio with their dad. That part will suck but we've learned to spend the holidays together when we are with each other and not focus on the actually calendar day. That may be odd to some but it's the only way to make it more comforting. Thank goodness for Skype. My parents are here so we will be together eating good food and opening presents. There isn't much that I want because I am addicted to shopping and spoil myself too much. Does wanting "Santa" to pay off my debt count?

Yeah, kinda. The first year we migrated and that is the first time i'm thousand miles away from my family.I am dissappointed, sad and I don't even feel that it is Christmas at all.
It is sad to celebrate Christmas away from your family.
I used to celebrate in the place where I grew up and the people whom I used to be with especially my family, we always do our traditions which are to eat together, attend mass altogether, attend the 9days morning mass, gift giving with other relatives and I miss seeing children go house to house to sing Christmas carol.

My mom and I had a disappointing Christmas a few years back. My aunt(my mom's sister) got us hand-me-down gifts. And no, not the ones that could be useful. Interesting ones...
I received frozen cookies that look like they been sitting in the back of the freezer for a year and yes...they had frostbite on them, I am not just saying that to exaggerate.
My mom received a little apron that looked straight out from the 50's that my aunt had gotten from a dead family members house(it was more than likely the dead family member's at one point). The apron was as old and stained as can be.
Talk about...being in shock and awe. We just stared at her with agape mouths, before forcing a smile and letting out a real, real strained 'thank you', when all we wanted to do was throw the items in her face.
She kinda of reminded me of a certain someone...
Let's just say...we've never let her hear the end of it...nicely, of course(and with lots of joking attached).

My honey got me a big cast iron skillet and a hand mixer a few years back. I was not happy at all but faked it. I finally told him that I would rather buy what I wanted for the kitchen as I need it. I asked him if he would like me getting him something that he used at work like a tool and he smiles and says "Hell ya!" I was going for more of a "Oh, I get it" kind of analogy but I finally get it. He was thinking of me and I was upset because I felt he didn't understand me and just grabbed something (anything) last minute.
I learned to tell him straight up what I would like. It's usually a meal out just him and I and not in December. We're both happier now.

Train him! start saying what you want, show him magazine of fashion, jewlery, vacations etc. He will eventually catch on.
