essential oils

Published

I know there is a thread on here somewhere about essential oil use in schools. If someone could link me to it, I would appreciate it. We have a parent in one of our elementary schools whose children use oils for ADHD in addition to meds. I won't debate weather it helps or not, because I don't know. My concern is if the kiddo is putting on oils in class, isn't the whole class pretty much using them? Opinions? References? Thanks!

i think the counter is that in order to give them and break school policy, she would need to give medically backed, peer review study rationale as to why it is necessary for her child to receive the oils during school hours. Simply giving some articles she prints off of a facebook group will not suffice in this case.

It is there thankfully a policy about only FDA approved things, BUT Mom is demanding to know the rational behind that and a bunch of our other policies because our state's NPA doesn't specifically list that essential oils cannot be used and she is contacting everyone from my superintendent here, our special needs department, to the head of my state's BON. She is trying to make the case that our policies are "unfounded" and illegal.

I have always been the person to handle the angry phone calls in every nursing role I've been in because I am usually good at calming the crazies. But my voice was shaking at the end of my 30 min phone conversation with this parent because I just couldn't deal with being screamed at anymore over something like this. I'm more collected today but I've already received 3 more emails with a threatening tone that my boss is thankfully included on.

And Far I wish I could run out screaming.

No. No more 30 minute phone calls with this crazy woman.

Tell your Principal that the law has been explained to this woman and you will no longer field her calls about essential oils.

Enough.

She is taking you away from the other children.

Hang in there. People are nuts.

At this point you shouldn't even be involved with her - hand the calls to the principal.

Does this parent even have the support of her child's doctor? I mean, yes, ugh all the crazy and I'm with every single one of you, but if she is going to take this so far, she should at least have a doctor's order, right? I'm not administering any medication outside of my very simple standing orders that has been signed by my school physician. And those do not include essential oils.

Now if she did get a doctor's order for her kid. Oy Vey.

There is a doctor's order, which is one of the mother's key points in arguing with us.

I have now been instructed to no longer respond or communicate with her. She told my boss that she has been recording our phone conversations and sharing them with her lawyer.

THEN last night at curriculum night she approached our new principal and the first thing she said after she introduced herself is "I'm really NOT crazy".:sarcastic:

If one has to introduce themselves like that...

And really, a doctor wrote an order for this? I don't even know what to say to that.

Are you in a state where it is legal to record someone without their knowledge? If not, I would most certainly have your principal let her know that.

We got a new phone system (which is AWESOME) this year. There is a "record" option which led me to ask if it was legal. In our state, only one party has to be aware of the recording, likely the one doing the recording. It will come in handy if I have a coo-coo nester like yours.

"coo-coo nester" :) Where is that rolling on the floor laughing guy when I need him?

Was it CANNIBIS OIL?

'Cause, yea.

I can see that nowadays...

We jumped through a lot of hoops, including consulting with law enforcement, regarding administering CBD oil to a student. After much rigamarole, it was allowed. It helped this profoundly disabled student become more verbal AND reduced the frequency of seizures, which all the "normal" FDA-approved medications were not doing. I'm a believer.

Now for the parent treating the raging ear infection with tea tree oil?? :banghead:

I also have a couple of friends using it for severe migraines with very good preliminary results. I'm not closed to the idea of it, but would love some continued studies and data to analyse. And school perimeters and orders and a pony...

Update on my EO kiddo: It's getting applied at home, I haven't received an email or angry phone call all week. Little one has been having a TOUGH time in class.

But today my principal came to touch base with me because mom is now saying that I broke HIPPA by talking to the before care staff about her daughter no longer using her rx. Fun fact: She picked up the med from the before care staff...so of course they knew.

I told my principal i still count this as a win because I rather have a single threat than 10000 phone calls and emails.
