I know there is a thread on here somewhere about essential oil use in schools. If someone could link me to it, I would appreciate it. We have a parent in one of our elementary schools whose children use oils for ADHD in addition to meds. I won't debate weather it helps or not, because I don't know. My concern is if the kiddo is putting on oils in class, isn't the whole class pretty much using them? Opinions? References? Thanks!
hey all! welcome back! poking my head back in between making my desk not look like a tsunami of paperwork.
So... i have dabbled in essential oils and do deal with them lightly... but i will not apply them to children. If mom wants them, she can apply them before school. If the teacher notices that little Jimmy comes back from the bathroom smelling suddenly very much like Frankinsence then Lucy gots some splainin' to do. No authorized meds in school and nothing that's not supported by the FDA - it's my license so no, i'm not looking the other way.

It's about time you showed up. I think essential oils smell purdy good.
May become an issue for me. We have a child who uses it and we have a first year teacher for him. We are trying to figure how to accommodate his needs with little to no classroom disruption. He may become my responsibility, but he has "issues" with men beside his father ( I question his XYedness).
Old thread, Still a problem.
I spoke with a parent yesterday who was absolutely furious that I won't let her little one use an essential oil during class. She has threatened to get my license removed, sue me, sue the school, sue her teacher and she has sent me roughly 30 emails asking for the exact part in the nurse practice act that says I cannot administer this.
She is also convinced that her daughter "caught" autism from the school and this "will cure her". This was after she told me she was "like a nurse"

Check your school's medication policy. And, hope it says that only FDA approved medications will be administered at school. If that wording isn't in there. Explain to your administrator that it needs to be changed at your very next school board meeting. Since you work for the district and must work under what is approved by the local school board. This will explain very plainly to the mom as to why you cannot administer or have the dern Oils in the classroom.
Good luck and keep us posted on how you are getting along with this situation. We are here in your cheering section!!

It is there thankfully a policy about only FDA approved things, BUT Mom is demanding to know the rational behind that and a bunch of our other policies because our state's NPA doesn't specifically list that essential oils cannot be used and she is contacting everyone from my superintendent here, our special needs department, to the head of my state's BON. She is trying to make the case that our policies are "unfounded" and illegal.
I have always been the person to handle the angry phone calls in every nursing role I've been in because I am usually good at calming the crazies. But my voice was shaking at the end of my 30 min phone conversation with this parent because I just couldn't deal with being screamed at anymore over something like this. I'm more collected today but I've already received 3 more emails with a threatening tone that my boss is thankfully included on.
And Far I wish I could run out screaming.

Oh, and the oil diffusion would not be for the "treatment" of anything, or to "create a calming environment" ...no claims of this sort on the permission slip...just because the teacher thinks it is nice.
