Can I vent just a bit...
Right now, we have a teen mom in labor who, herself, has a repaired septal heart defect. The sono she had in pregnancy was suggestive of heart defects in her baby. She did not follow up with a level 3 sono, nor go downtown when finally in labor. (we only have level 2 1/2 nsy - no level 3)
She says she came here because our hospital is 'prettier than the ones downtown' :trout:
-- OH... AND (now @ 43 1/2 weeks) that 'she didn't like the other hospital because they wanted to induce her labor'. Ya think?!
WHAT IS WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!! :uhoh3:

...The heart thing and not following up with the better sono - not the first time this has happened. About a year ago, we were wondering why new, term baby was crying vigourously and not pinking up with O2 BB. Mom: 'Oh yea - the doctor said something about one side of his heart being bigger than the other' She never went for her follow up sono either. OB didn't make her, or tell her she should deliver downtown. HOLY $#!& PEOPLE!
Catching babies these days is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.
As to "dumb" . . . one of my relatives did the gasoline on a bonfire thing.
My hubby does this everytime we go to the lake. one time I was downhill from him and a flash of blue fire burnt the butt of my swimming suit and singed my hair as I flew into the lake.
His comment after I asked him what was he thinking? "Man, she is going to be sooooo mad." and "Wow I never knew a fat woman could run that fast"
When I worked ER the first thing that just blew me away was common sense was not a common denominator.
This reminds me of a movie I just watched called "Idiocracy". It's about how in 500 years if all the 'stupid' people keep reproducing at alarming rates, and the high IQ people keep waiting to start a family when the "time is right", we'll just be a very dumb society.
I saw this in action the other night as a 17 yo G4P2 came in with her mother. The mother of the teen had on a tight wife beater type shirt, with her lacy bra and boobs hanging out and a pair of daisy dukes and was about as dumb as a box of rocks. She was actually excited her 17yo was having a third baby!! I just felt so sorry for the little baby, and the babies at home. It's so sad sometimes. I try and concentrate on the happy stories.

I've seen plenty of that. I'm not sure what causes them to act that way - wanting to appear supportive... getting another 'check baby'... or just being plain stupid and not realizing there could be a better life for their kid if she'd get an education (or at least a husband with one) instead of a litter.

Idiocracy is a funny (and crass-satirical) movie that's right on this topic!!
By that I mean that it is not the brightest move in the world to get pregnant @ 15; but then I guess 15 y/o's are not developementally ready and able to make judgement calls like that.
Having worked w/quite a few/15 y/o Moms, some are great, no doubt about it. A lot of them have very unrealistic expectations of babies and 24/7 responsibilities they entail. I would much rather see them stay in school, graduate and be self-supporting before tackling motherhood.
That is JMO. If you disagree, I respect that.

The mom I spoke of is 15. As you recall, she refused to be induced - came in 43 1/2 weeks. They did a section early yesterday morning. Her baby doesn't have a heart defect - fortunate for the baby, but unfortunately reinforces her thinking that the high risk sono, etc. was 'not necessary' - but baby is very wasted, skinny and definitely post-dates.
Now that everyone has 'fussed' at her about being non-compliant with and refusing care etc... she is mad and threatening to sue if anything is wrong with her baby.
Grow a brain, honey. If anything is wrong with your baby, it's because you refused good medical advice & treatment.
