Hello online nursing community!
I have a very important question that I'm hoping to get some help with:
My girlfriend is an RN and we've been dating for a couple years now. I've been saving up for an engagement ring (although buying one is still about a year away), and I'm pretty sure I have the design and what-not down but a thought occurred to me recently: what will she do with the ring while at work?
Something tells me that a diamond ring would get in the way of her day-to-day operations, and while I know she'd want to wear it, I wouldn't want it to impede her duties (which she obviously takes seriously).
So my question is this: what are some of the solutions you all have come up with regarding similar situations? Do you have a less expensive secondary ring you wear? Or do you just go ringless when you're on' shift?
I always wear my wedding ring! I have a modest 1/3 carat oval-cut diamond set in a band of small sapphires. My daily duties, however, consist of interviewing and assessing new psychiatric patients and participating in forensic team meetings. Occasionally, I do fill in as a medication nurse, and I usually remove my ring when I'm giving meds. I love my ring, and I love the sweet man I am married to!
That is pretty cool, the ring you wear at work.
I really love it. I debated getting the Hebrew version because that was the original language of the biblical text, but we're Catholic so Latin felt more in line with our tradition. And I chose the silver instead of gold on purpose, because I knew I wouldn't worry about washing it all the time. I've been wearing it for almost 4 years and it still looks great.
I don't wear it. I just leave it at home. We had a girl in clinicals one day forget to leave hers at home and she took it off and put it in her pocket for our clinical rotation. By the end of the shift she had lost it and we looked all over the hospital but couldn't find it. The last I heard she never did find it.
Unfortunately, as nurses we have to think of our patients first. It is a huge infection control risk so it's better to be on the safe side and just not wear them at work.
Just my 2 cents
I got engaged in January and my ring is a round cut diamond in a bezel setting...nice and flat and no prongs to get caught on gloves. I absolutely love it. We talked about this beforehand and I mentioned wanting something on the flatter side so that I didn't have that worry. I didn't want him spending money on an engagement ring that I didn't wear half the time. I'm glad he asked my thoughts on the matter. Good luck in proposing to your girlfriend, OP!
there are silicon rings that are great for this sort of thing. I wear mine while I am at drill with the reserves, working out, or doing anything that my ring would cause pain/catch on things with. I cant really feel it but the symbolism is still there. The more expensive Qalo is about $30, but my husband and I got our rings off of amazon for $8 for two. He is also reserves so it works for us. We still wear our regular rings any other time.

It looks like The One Ring.

I want to get a matching set for my husband and I of these rings! He is very outdoorsy and I work in the hospital - we both have times when we need to have the real rings at home on the bedside table. :)

I have a diamond solitaire engagement ring and an heirloom wedding band. I also have a "cheapy" band that I wear to clinicals, sometimes. Usually I just go sans jewelry to the hospital because the gloves rub the band weird and I never feel like I can get my hands clean. I never wear my "real" stuff to clinical at all.

Ditto this. I've always worn my engagement/wedding rings, even at work. Also, my current ring, if I take it in every 6 months for inspection/cleaning, they will replace any lost stones for free.
