Elizabeth Warren says doctors, nurses don't treat black women same way as other women

Is it bash medical professions month and I just didn't realize it?

Don't get me wrong I do believe that prejudice exists but according to Ms. Warren, the only concievable reason for the increased materials deaths in African American women is due to doctors and nurses being prejudice. This is absolutely ludicrous.

It certainly doesn't make me feel good, when nurses, who are in a position to effect change, instead engage in such antics, and play political games.

But that's the subtlety of prejudice. We react in ways that are innocent but thoughtless. Personally, I admit that I have some level of unconscious stereotypical stupid thoughts but make a conscious effort not to act on them. I can't appreciate the REAL lives of others and I don't expect them to appreciate all the experiences that make me who I am. This is hard stuff. The best I can do is think of justice as a virtue to guide my actions. And, on the side, hope I can go to my nephew's Bar Mitzvah this weekend without being shot...in a synagogue with Jersey barriers in front. Yes, accustomed to the hate:(

How did she use people of color? She relied on family stories that said she was NA. When she did her DNA, she apologized to the NA community for claiming that heritage. I guarantee you a lot of the people who think they are of any specific heritage would be surprised when they did their DNA. In fact, I wish every white supremacist in this country took a DNA test to see just how non european and non white they actually are. It may solve a lot of problems. Or not.

Beside that point, EW's point on worse outcomes for Black people, women in particular, is well documented. She has a voice to help fix this issue. So why shouldn't she be able to speak on it? Because she once thought she was NA? If it came from any other politician, I'd agree as well. Even if I hated that politician. We need to stand together in the country on FACTS and SCIENCE regardless of the political stance.

How can one prove racism as a variable without a study group and a control group? How could such a study even be designed? As I have said before on this forum, there are multiple variables besides race that can affect pregnancy outcome. Remove the words black and replace it with impoverished (think of all the variables that come with impoverishment, drug addiction, lack of prenatal care, etc.) How can you control the term "impoverished" in this kind of research? What about the genetics of arriving on this earth from a line of parents who were extremely poor? This research blaming racism as an independent variable looks like swiss cheese to me. Muno, I always enjoy your acumen so you, and anyone else, feel free to fire away. And BTW, the comments on this thread tell me that racism is alive and well.

Just a thought here. Perhaps the changes need to start when the women are much younger. I would go to my son's science class once a month to talk about health. When you have 5 young black girls (my son was the only white child) in the class, 13 to 14 years old on BLOOD PRESSURE medications and one young lady was a Type 2 diabetic already, perhaps the problem starts much younger.

Food plays an important part in the health of our children and all schools are failing. Physical education also plays a major part as well. Why was PE, at least in some areas, removed from 1 - 9th grades? What happened to health and nutrition teaching? Why are there no programs that reinforce the idea that fresh vegetables and fruits are very important in the diet? I would send home sample menus, inexpensive but not high caloric meals, some that I used often. Why is EBT being used at gas stations that only sell snacks and fast foods and not at some local farmers markets? Why are there no farmers markets in areas easily accessible for those who must use public transportation or walk.

One changes the outcomes by starting at the root and for my money the root is the crappy way children eat, the lack of teaching and the lack of available fresh foods for some. I taught nutrition to those young people, while in scrubs, after working all night but it was too important to say - let someone else do it.

Think about it for a minute - 13 and 14 year old girls on blood pressure medications. What do those medications do to a developing body? I was devastated when I heard that. Some of those girls only had prepackaged foods in their homes or their mother brought home fast food for dinner because they worked all day. That is the root cause - now fix it.

For those keeping score I live in the deep South, fried everything and starch country galore. I am also white and MD's treat all women in the ER with distain, white, black, hispanic or any other heritage. I worked there and was a patient in my own ER, I know how women are treated.

It’s a major surgery.” He smiled and chuckle and ordered the man pain medicine. He’s leg was cut off about 8 hours ago and nobody seemed to care to ask him if he was hurting prior to my shift. He was restless in bed.

One word...horrible. I'm so tired of these stories, they bring me to tears. Tired of people treating AAs less than human. People treat animals better. Minorities are just like everyone else. How would these people like it if the tables were turned? They couldn't handle it. It would be a national out cry for equality.

Some black nurses are prejudice too. You'd think that all blacks aren't prejudice, you're out of your mind. It has nothing to do with being blacks. Some people are prejudice regardless. It is the person which is more common in other groups than the others.

If you see no color but a person, you are likely to be less prejudice.
