Thought I'd start a new thread about this topic -- the NCSBN survey some of us EC grads have received. I just got this email from EC:
It has come to our attention that the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NSCBN) has distributed a survey stating they are "conducting a study to address the practice performance of graduates from traditional and non-traditional nursing programs."
This survey is not endorsed or approved by Excelsior College, nor were we consulted concerning the design or the intent of the survey; moreover we are concerned that it is structured in a way that will yield negative and inaccurate results. NCSBN has not clearly articulated how the results of the survey will be used or how it will be communicated to other parties.
You may be concerned that your decision to complete or not complete the survey will change your current RN licensure. Be assured that the NCSBN cannot revoke your license for lack of participation in the survey.
We believe it is not in your best interest to complete the survey; however participation in the survey is your decision. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. You can call 888-647-2388; dial 1-3-1-5 at the prompt and this will connect you with the State Boards office.
I'm not sure what to think about the whole thing. I have my survey and letter all together, ready to mail. I'm not sure that the NCSBN should have consulted EC in the first place regarding the design of the study ... I mean, really? Wouldn't that make it less objective?

Yes, I got the letter too and I already mailed it back. EC I think should be happy that someone is looking at the school and taking a survey. I answered the questions truthfully and I have never felt incompetent to do my job. Nor does anybody care where I went to school and for my lack of not knowing how to do some skills. I got to practice and now I am capable of doing them. I did a 12 week nurse residency program along with other new graduates.
I feel like you, the NCSBN should not have let EC know about the study. EC needs to get their head out of the sky!!

I got the same email. Me and my friend that completed the program last year were talking on the phone yesterday about it. They can't take our RN license back can they? I am thinking they can't. We took the NCLEX fair and square. I just hope that their motives are good. I think the program is great and don't want to see it end.

i don't know why they are conducting such a survey ....but in my opinion it is not good news for ec....do they single out other nursing programs like this...i got mine and filled it out....i would not worry about loosing ur license based on this but i don't know what the future holds for ec

do they single out other nursing progrms like this...
There aren't any other nursing programs like EC -- that's the point, and that's where the controversy comes from. State BONs require students from all other nursing programs to have a minimum of X number of hours of supervised clinical experience as part of their nursing education in order to be eligible for the NCLEX, but EC has always been the lone exception to that rule. I'm not trying to be hostile or argumentative, but I've never understood why EC and its students get special treatment.

I don't think it's special treatment, I think it just goes with their (EC) motto of, and don't quote me but I think it's something like " It's what you know, not where you learn it" EC's policy for the nursing program, have certain requirements of either being a LPN/LVN, or any other licensed professional or either 50% of previous nursing school. Which clinical time is a part of any of those programs. Why repeat something if you already have the credit under your belt? Just another perspective! Have a Great Day! And guess what, I live in Michigan and I just heard an ice cream truck go by!!!!! Whooopeeee!!!!!

hmmm.... as a new excelsior student I am concerned about what the survey means for myself and other students that are not close to graduating. I hope this does not lead to extensive changes at EC! I think the program is such a great option for those of us who cannot bc of life circumstances go back to a traditional program.

I find it interesting that over the years outside parties find it necessary to discredit EC. I see no reason for the particular survey other than to draw negative attention to and make negative assessments of the EC program. NCSBN should find more constructive projects.

If any state board of nursing chooses to change its regulations and stop recognizing Excelsior College graduates it would only impact those applying for license from that point forward. They would never revoke your license once you have it nor would they impose any additional clinical training or preceptorship on you.
You would only need to meet any normal requirements for maintaining your RN license for the state you are in. This is typically satisfied by some in-service training or Continuing Education Units. It varies from state to state and you would need to review the regulations at the Board of Nursing website for that state.

Thanks for clarifying!

I received and filled out the survey. The way the design of the survey was confusing, and may yield inaccurate data damaging to EC and EC grads. I believe that this is why EC warns that it may not be in the EC grad's interest to fill out the poorly (or suspiciously) designed survey. The appearance of this survey does not bode well. I shredded mine.
