Duke ABSN Fall 2020

Published

Hello! I figured it was time to start this thread now that the application deadline is nearly here. Let us commence the stress and commiseration!

I finally submitted my Duke ABSN application yesterday after being away from my computer for months while traveling. I feel excited and hopeful, but the reality is that I won't be able to attend without a significant scholarship. I love Duke's program and my partner lives outside of Durham (I'm currently near Tucson, AZ) so this could be the perfect fit.

Nursing will be a second career for me--I'm 34. I'm curious whether most of my fellow applicants are younger or around my age?

Good luck everyone!

I'll try and drum up some questions tomorrow @garssta. Honestly, I'm thinking that school may not even happen in the Fall. Read a really interesting statistical article about how the virus will lull in Summer but reemerge in Fall meaning quarantines again. Hoping we can sell our house here in Florida and I won't have to leave my elderly Mom to fend for herself. I'm pulling over 40 hour weeks at the hospital currently. BUT I still hold out hope and I swear if I can get up there we WILL have to meet up!

Do we know if Duke sets up a FB page? I know other schools do? I want to meet other folk! Also I heard Durham has a pretty gnarly beer scene and they have a whole bar for Cider and that makes me really happy as a former UK resident!

We have had our first patient die here at my hospital due to Corona, so things are a little tense...

Oh, WOW!.. that is super intense - but your service at the hospital right now is super appreciated.

I would be super interested in reading that article if you still have it! YES! Raleigh has a good number of breweries, 25 the last I heard; Raleigh Beer Garden is my favorite. Bull City Ciderwords is the one you're talking about, I believe!! I have been dying to go, but none of my friends are into ciders or sour beer like I am.

Regarding the FB page, I do not believe one has been made yet - I think the DUSON admissions offices creates it?

what did you guys think of Duke Days?

Durham (and Chapel Hill/Raleigh) both have a lot of places for going out! I lived in Durham for about 3.5 years and have lived a little farther west for the past year but still go to the area to go out every once in a while.

Duke Admissions said they will make the FB page after the official deadline date for accepting/rejecting admission--so I guess around April 1st

I thought the faculty/staff was much more beneficial than the student panel, to be honest. I ended up leaving the student panel about 45 minutes in because I thought they were repeating the same things a lot and it also just wasn't as well organized as the faculty/staff. It made me a little nervous because I was excited about the school after hearing what the faculty had to say, but immediately lost a lot of interest after hearing the students speak. I'm just not sure the extra cost of the Duke education is worth it when I could also go to a UNC-affiliated school for a fraction of the cost.

Interesting. I only was able to attend the student session and I agree wholeheartedly. It felt pretty disorganized (and given the circumstances, they did a great job!) and I felt like they skipped over the money and financial questions. did they answer those questions with the staff and faculty?

Specializes in Nursing Student.

@britbrat0105 If you have a cheaper option that will still provide a good education (and a BSN), it’s probably a good idea to take it!

Can you please expand upon what was it that made you feel that it was disorganized? And why did you lose interest?

Thanks!

Why do you say so please?

I'm guessing because you get the same degree and same (or close) nursing salary without the debt and financial strain ^

Is anyone choosing the ABSN program over an entry-level MSN? If so, why?

Depends on long term plans. If you just want BSN the choose any program. If you want a crna / np / med doc then go top 20 schools for your BSN

Excited to meet you guys!
