Duke ABSN Fall 2020

Published

Hello! I figured it was time to start this thread now that the application deadline is nearly here. Let us commence the stress and commiseration!

I finally submitted my Duke ABSN application yesterday after being away from my computer for months while traveling. I feel excited and hopeful, but the reality is that I won't be able to attend without a significant scholarship. I love Duke's program and my partner lives outside of Durham (I'm currently near Tucson, AZ) so this could be the perfect fit.

Nursing will be a second career for me--I'm 34. I'm curious whether most of my fellow applicants are younger or around my age?

Good luck everyone!

Seems really likely to be canceled.

I got my financial aid package today!

I feel like it will be helpful for future applicants so I will divulge my info. My FAFSA EFC was 0.

I got a $22,500 need-based scholarship. It looks like they only provide the package for the 2020-2021 academic year, so fall 2021 is not included. I am eligible for $12,500 in federal loans. The rest I would have to make up in private loans! So we'll see how I fare in my other scholarship applications.

I'm interested to see what kinds of need-based aid others receive, if you're willing to share.

$45,000 from DUSON/HEA scholarship stipend = room & board???/$12,500 government loans/$10,000 out of pocket savings...Still short $18,000 or $6,000 per semester. I hope they have good private loan information in May. I'm applying to NCP, hopefully I get it. I went ahead and paid deposit.

So I missed the financial aid deadline...YES I KNOW I'M AN IDIOT. Life just got the better of me. I applied for the merit scholarship. Have we heard about those yet or is it one of those...if you havent heard, you didn't get one? Not sure how it all works. I'll be sending in my deposit soon.

@orneryscientistDid you make a choice on school then?

I will most likely be attending the MSN program at Hopkins. I received a very generous scholarship.

There is more nursing scholarship to apply for once you actually start school. But, I may end up taking the surgical first assistant program at mayo, it’s one year $20,000 total cost /99% job placement/ 300 people from all over US applied and only 20 people (including me & this very beautiful woman got in LOL). We could start a family ?. The job pays $60k first year with $90k average over 4 years at Mayo Clinic. Over 1100+ hours hands on surgical training hours. I just really want to do nursing to be a navy commissioned officer so bad, & travel the seas offering humanitarian aid. I would rather make $40k a year/be criticized for being a male nurse/wake up 4AM to be yelled at for pt as a navy nurse, than make $90k as a surgical assistant. Still, I’m going to shadow surgical assistants to get a better idea. Surgery work is a lot like factory work in a way, which I got enough of after high school. You may get my spot by late May if I can’t make enough from work to pay for Duke.

anyone heard anything from the waitlist?

Duke Days canceled. An email was sent out today. Instead they'll be doing "Virtual Duke Days."

Of course I'm missing the virtual day as I'll be at work at the hospital! ? Paying my depost tomorrow hopefully!

I know the feeling! My pupper has a vet appointment during the second half of the virtual duke days, so that I will be missing the student panel. I plan on participating in the faculty panel @OctaviaF, if you have any questions you'd like me to ask, DM me and I will do my best to get them answered for you!

Since we will no longer have an in-person Duke Days, maybe some of us can set up something (like a small get together at a brewery or park, IDK LOL) as we get closer to August. Maybe the end of July or early August? Just so we can get to meet and know one another... this program is going to be a wild ride, I'm sure, so I think we would all benefit from a strong support team.

I'll try and drum up some questions tomorrow @garssta. Honestly, I'm thinking that school may not even happen in the Fall. Read a really interesting statistical article about how the virus will lull in Summer but reemerge in Fall meaning quarantines again. Hoping we can sell our house here in Florida and I won't have to leave my elderly Mom to fend for herself. I'm pulling over 40 hour weeks at the hospital currently. BUT I still hold out hope and I swear if I can get up there we WILL have to meet up!

Do we know if Duke sets up a FB page? I know other schools do? I want to meet other folk! Also I heard Durham has a pretty gnarly beer scene and they have a whole bar for Cider and that makes me really happy as a former UK resident!

We have had our first patient die here at my hospital due to Corona, so things are a little tense...

has anyone heard from the waitlist yet?
