Does anyone get their books unbound?

Hi All,

I am looking forward to starting NS in a few weeks (aug 23). I went to the bookstore at school and the books are huge! A lady told me she has her books unbound at OfficeMax and just carries around the chapter that she is working on and this save having to lug the books around. Has anyone else done this? It sounds like a good idea and I dont plan to sell my books back so it may be an option. Just wanted to know what you guys think?

I considered this, but after the semester is over I'd like to have my book intact. Do you know if they can rebind them or not? If they could I would def. do it! We have 14 books this semester!

You could always place the pages in a big binder. It's not like it originally was but atleast you wont loose the pages or anything!

I purchased my A&P book unbound. I loved it! I could just take what we were learning with me. It was a back saver.

I would definitely consider unbinding them and then binding them in the spiral setting. Then just have them all rebound together, if you want, when you're done with them.

Great idea!!

But, I really like being able to sell back textbooks at the end of the semester. As much as I say I will refer back to them, I rarely do. I have an old textbooks that my husband had while in nursing school that I look at sometimes if I need to reference something, and I sell back my newer books. Otherwise, I would do this in a heartbeat.

I don't ever sell back my texts. I always buy them at a huge discount (usually only pay $2-$4 because I buy the previous edition, of which there are a glut on alibris.com.) I'm pretty sure I paid more for the unbinding than I did on the text. And having the previous edition has never hurt my studies- the one teacher who told me I needed a new edition praised me for being such a great student when I finished her class (in which I had used a prior edition) with a 100.

I did buy current editions of my nursing math (just so the problems would be exactly the same- I was nervous about that) and my drug guide, but I bought them online, too, so that I didn't pay anywhere near full price.

I'm a horrible book-fiend myself, but I don't think of this as destruction of the book. It is all safe in my binder- the covers are even in the front and back pocket outside the binder- and it is far more accessible to me now than it was before. I have a much better relationship with my book today than I did two days ago. ;)

Am I the only one who hates unbound books?

My math book for my intermediate algebra class was unbound and I found it so obnoxious! My developmental psych book for this semester is unbound as well. (Both came without binding, and hole punched so you can put them into 3-ring binders). Books like that drive me nuts!

My school also doesn't have us bring our books to class, and, each of our individual books aren't that heavy anyway. I actually think most of them weigh less than the A&P books I've had!

Books arnt meant to be destroyed!

I could NEVER do that to a book.. EVER.. :twocents:

If you paid for the book and are keeping the book than what does it matter? It's not as if it's a first edition historical novel.

This actually sounds like a great idea.

I am guessing they double posted and edited it because they couldn't delete the post.

2-4 dollars?? Wow, I wish I could find books that cheap here, that almost sounds ridiculous. Our clinical handbook alone was 170$, and our schools don't carry previous editions. The cheapest I could get was 40$ second hand from a nursing graduate.

I'm guessing she buys them online from places like half.com, amazon.com, and alibris.com :) That's what I do too.. all of my books were under $5, except the ones that I needed the current editions for. I've used previous editions for pretty much every class I've ever taken (when possible) and I've never had a problem.

I checked out Alibris, and it's considerably cheaper than amazon and other online bookstores.. but shipping is 10$ and 6$ for every additional book to Canada. I guess if you live in the US and can get the free shipping, it's more of a deal. But the books I found were not even the previous editions, they went back to 2002 or 1999...
