Do you raid the patient fridge?

Published

Time to 'fess up ladies and gents. :clown: Who here raids the patient fridge, and if so, what is your fav? Are you guilty of jello diversion? Or, is cookie addiction your weakness? Do you limit yourself to graham crackers and milk or do you go for the hard stuff?

This is an anonymous online forum, time to spill yer guts...

As for me, I used to be a weakling for jello. I like red jello, but my favorite is orange. I'm now in recovery from that addiction.

Now I'll have an occasional mini box of wheaties, and an occasional cookie if they aren't too soft. Graham crackers and milk make a quick snack when my blood sugar gets a little low from skipping a meal.

When I worked nights at my former job I was thinking of assembling a small recipe book from patient fridge items. One of my staples then was a microwave grilled cheese sandwich.

I have also learned that those little 4oz vanilla ice cream cups smashed between two graham crackers make one fine desert!!

I'll have to try this, it sounds yummy! As for me, the Pepsi is the only thing I "borrow"

No. Aside from the fact that I know that food is meant for patients, I am kind of grossed out by all of it.

Diet Mt Dew is my weakness..... a rice krispy treat is nice now & then!:yeah:

I think there must have been a lot of "borrowing" done on my unit...we have to order soda through food service to come up on specific meal trays. I tried graham crackers once...wasn't a fan.

But I have a coworker who drinks two cranberry juices every morning after report. I suppose in the long run, it might save the hospital the cost of covering medical expenses for a UTI...

We have the NASTIEST ham and cheese sandwiches, so I KNOW i'm waaaay hungry when I snag one of those puppies and eat it:barf01:

But I'm a great fan of the chocolate milk. I try to restrain myself, but when I spot some choco-milk, I'm a maniac!

I don't feel too bad about snagging the food because we always have too much. The kitchen can't seem to get it right, but as long as I get some yummy chocolate milk, I'll not complain!

Wow you guys are spoilt rotten lol.

Our cafeteria is open from 0830-1600 and is a privately run business in the hospital.

Our kitchen is open from 0600-1800.

On the ward after hours we get a limited number (3 usually) of cheese sandwhiches and packet soup (chicken noodle). Thats it!

Nothing more is stocked because "the staff might eat it" (end quote)!

LOL they are probably right.

Nicky.

p.s. on night duty its bring your own or starve.

N.B. Tea, coffee, milk & sugar are supplied for staff use.

Gota love the free Coke machine at my clinic. Drug reps bring in lots of snack stuff for chemo pts.

Did you know corn nuts can not be eaten quietly? And smell up the whole hall. We MA's get busted for those frequently.

I call it " my Christmas bonus" since ours is usually pathetic.

Milk

Graham crackers and peanut butter.

I don't feel bad about it because I don't make a habit out of it. Usually because there was have been countless times I've had no lunch and not filled out a slip....so the hospital can spare $2 in crackers for all the 30 minutes I've been docked.

Staff is allowed to drink soda and coffee from the patient kitchen. Any other snacks I might "indulge" in are out of dire necessity. The way I see it, if my employer cares too little about staff to make sure we get our breaks, then if I have to grab some crackers or a chocolate pudding from the patient kitchen just to avoid having a hypoglycemic meltdown and thus not providing "excellent patient care", then they should consider that a cost of doing business.

Guilty as charged

Milk and graham crackers or juice from the pt fridge for a quick snack on the crazy nights. Raid the docs lounge for bagels, salads, sandwiches, string cheese, soda, yogurt, fruit or granola bars for the 'slightly less crazy but still too busy to hit the cafeteria' times

Saltines, peanut butter, cranberry juice. But I go to the kitchen when it opens and pay for the juice.
