Of the nurses I know, some have their place of employment on their FB page and some do not.

I am just curious to see if you post your place of employment on your FB page and your reasoning behind your decision.

I'll start:

As a new grad, on the hunt for a job, I was originally thinking that the minute I finally become employed I am going to shout it to the world (meaning put it on FB). But then I got to thinking...is this really a good idea?

I have previously worked in healthcare (non-nursing) and even then I was hesitant about posting my place of employment on FB. I mean I did, but, this time feels different. I do not plan to post my future places of employment on FB.

I previously did not realize that anyone can find you (including patients) just by typing in your place of employment!

I have seen (I believe here on AN--maybe not--not sure) a story where a patient's family member/friend has attempted to friend the nurse on FB hoping to gain information about a patient.

Just seems a little risky IMO...

But I'm curious to hear others opinions and reasoning!

Oh yeah we post pictures from work sometimes. I only post good stuff but I love my job so that makes a difference.

At this point, I don't list my employer, but I do list that I'm an RN.

I am thinking about changing it if I accept this new job; I have plans to remain in their system, so I'll list the system and leave it at that.

My page is pretty locked down, and my posts are mild and are usually inspirational posts that are non-denominational, and where I've traveled; no drunk postings or embarrassing pics either.

And I leave work at work, so no good bad, or indifferent posts about my work either.

I check my FaceBook page every few months. FB is an evil timesucker. And no, I don't list my employer, my profession or much of anything else.

Nope. I don't list my companies. Don't "like" their pages. And a couple years ago I started gutting my friends list to people I actively worked with vs acquaintance coworkers due to some FB drama that got blown way up and out of proportion. I have privacy locked down but I still feel like "they" can see me. I do talk about work because it's a big part of my life but no patient details or stories.

It is not a good idea to list your employer on FB. There are some facilities who do not want you to--and even more that search one's fb for who knows what. But by listing your place of employment or "liking" pages, it can lead to some significant issues. FB is supposed to be fun. An outlet for all sorts of ideas and viewpoints. Not some work drama that now you have to deal with at home when you are just attempting to write "happy birthday" to a friend from jr high.

Private and work life should be 2 seperate things. And I would be really, really hesitant to post any pics of work. There has been more than one nurse who have gotten into hot water for that, regardless of whether they are "nice" pictures or not.

Oh yes I have my place of employment listed. Most of my FB friends are from work. I just don't post anything negative about work.

Exactly! FB is what you make of it. I rarely post statuses about work or anything. I just mostly play games.

Some of the political stuff makes me LOL though.

I list my place of employment. My director is also a FB friend. My page is pretty benign though. Mostly pictures of my nephew, books I am reading, trips with family etc. The rare times I am out drinking or something...my director is also bartender at the local watering hole, so I'm not too worried. My FB is locked down, I don't post about work. The last time I went out drinking, my director was the one buying my shots if that says anything...

I say I'm an RN at RN. LOL that's more than enough.

Do you post anything about work at all? While I was still in nursing school our dean told us that she never posted anything work-related on FB--even positive things. I have seen people on FB post pictures taken at work, post about how they love their job, etc. Any thoughts on that? I personally would be very hesitant to make any remarks about my job. But I tend to run on the more cautious side of things.

NEVER EVER post on FB ANYTHING patient or work related....EVER. NO employer listed. I am very careful what I put out there in cyberland.

I have a personal FB profile. I don't list my employer there.

I have a professional FB profile. I use it to promote my RN persona on social media. That's where I friend people from work, list my professional associations, post healthcare interest stuff, and never directly post anything about my employers. I use it as a tool to separate personal and professional social media life.

This stuff is here to stay, so I just post very conscientiously and always thinking about what will turn up when someone Googles me. I'm not scared of social media and use common sense when posting. I've connected to people with jobs to offer via FB.

Now, most of my nurse FB friends do not discriminate between personal and professional postings and sometimes I worry about their job security... Kind of waiting for the one who gets fired over a post. But, hey, people are just stupid sometimes.

I've had 2 FB profiles for years and now am noticing more people doing similarly.

I have seen a few people with a professional and personal FB and I think it is a great idea. I always felt uncomfortable adding co-workers, especially if they're just acquaintances. Not just because of drama but I don't want someone tagging me in their work-related rant or whatever else. But, it seems people take FB very seriously and may get offended if you don't accept their request. This would be a great solution. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
