Do I have a right to be upset?

Yes, it's that time again.

Holiday schedules. A time that every manager dreads.

Rec'd my holiday schedule today. My contract explicitly states that I am required to work one spring/summer holiday and one fall/winter holiday. I worked New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Easter, and today (Thanksgiving). I also worked Mother's and Father's Day. Last year I worked Dec. 24 & 25, New Years Eve and Day.

I find that I am scheduled Dec. 22, 23, 24, 25, 26. Then, 28, 30, 31 and Jan. 1. Dec. 22 & 23, scheduled 7a-7p. Dec. 24 & 25 scheduled 11a-11p. Dec. 26 scheduled 7a-3p.

Oh, but it gets better! Dec. 28 scheduled 11p-7a. Dec. 30 & 31 scheduled 7a-7p. Jan. 1 7a-3p. I need an ativan just thinking about going back between nights, days, and evenings.

Can you wrap your head around this schedule?? Granted, I will make alot in overtime but when am I to celebrate the holidays with my family? I'm weekend option so working so much during the week without notice is a complete surprise. Why am I working God-only-knows-how-many-hours while most of my fellow CNA's have requested off when you cannot request any time off Dec. 15 - Jan. 1?

Am I being a baby about this or would you be upset too?

I would be upset and yes, you have the right to be.

Specializes in ALF, Medical, ER.

I'd be raising cane about that one.

Specializes in LTC, office.

I would certainly be upset!

Specializes in cardiac/critical care/ informatics.

you cant work 11-7a than be scheduled to come in 7a-3 there asking you to do double thats crazy. All of those 12 hours in a row, what are they crazy. No you arent' being a baby that is one crazy schedule. I would most definetly be complaining.

Specializes in Emergency room, med/surg, UR/CSR.

You not only have a right to be upset, but if I were you, I would walk not run straight to your manager about this. If you are weekend option, they have not right to schedule you for anything but weekends. The perk they get is that you work every weekend, the perk you get is that you don't work during the week. And I wouldn't think that overtime would be mandatory unless there was a good reason and therefore NO ONE should be asking for and recieving time off. I would also point out how many of the other CNAs are taking off during the time that they're not supposed to be able to take off. It could be that your boss has no idea that this is going on. Who does your scheduling? If it's your direct boss then I would go to his/her boss. There's no way what they did to you is fair, and you have a right to speak up about this injustice. Guess I just have no patience for treating someone unfairly. Let us know how it turns out. Good luck.

Oops. I am off Dec. 29. I guess I got a little crazy typing all those numbers in a row.

You think it's too early for an April Fools joke?

9 out of 10 days? 6 of them being 12 hour shifts? Doubling back? What the HELL?

Not only do you have a right to be pissed, you have the right to demand they fix this crap. Holy hell.

BTW, how are you supposed to work 11-7 on the 29th, and then a 7A shift on the 30th? Did they mean for you to work 20 hours straight?

Honestly, I'd tell them to repair that schedule NOW or get crackin' on finding another CNA. You don't deserve to be abused like this.

Ah, I missed this in my shock over reading your schedule.

Tell 'em you're only working the weekends, just like your contract says. And that you've fulfilled your holiday requirement by working today. Just like your contract says. Don't allow them to do this to you hun.

If you worked New Years day and Thanksgiving, then you have already worked two winter holidays, one for this holiday period.

I would expect to be off all of Christmas and all of New Years.

As you are weekend option, neither Christmas nor New Years falls on the weekend. If it did, I'm sure they would expect you to work. Since it doesn't, you should be off.

I would definitely address it, and not let them take advantage of you if at all possible. Though we all know, they seem to be able to do whatever they want.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

too often when people work weekend option then is is assumed by schedulers that you are available any day in the week when they take a notion to write your name down

been there, ain't no fun

Pam, it's partly my fault.

I am not normally a doormat, but with this job I am. I have been extremely grateful to them for being understanding about time off d/t my treatment of crohn's. I offered to work one extra night a week - Thurs nights only because I am a student, until someone is hired for nights. I have went in at 2am to translate for patients. And the kicker is, aides do not receive premium pay (slightly more than time and a half) for coming in on days not scheduled, although all other staff does.

I have been searching for some time for a new job but I am ~ 1 year away from graduation in a non-medical field (political science) and I feel bad starting a new job then quiting.

I'm so thankful for the reassurances.
