Do you call your teachers by their 1st names?

Published

We do.

A nurse at clinical thought this was very strange and would not refer to my teacher by her first name.

What do you call your teachers?

there are certain instructors that i call by professor (whatever their name is). our clinical instructors i've always called by first name though. it depends how casual they are. i have to admit that depending on the instructor, i feel ten times more comfortable with them if they let us call them by their first name. it makes me feel less inferior. however, like i said, there are certain instructors that i have that i would never feel comfortable addressing by their first name.

Our program requires that we address instructors and clinical instructors as Ms./Mr. so-and-so. If the program director hears that an instructor asked to be called by their first name, they will be told not to do that. At first it felt odd because I am also an adult student but now it feels odd *not* to do it.

They say it's a rule because it fosters respect and professionalism, which many students are sorely lacking nowadays.

In pre-reqs I had a teacher who told us to use her first name but I never did, I didnt think it was appropriate either.

We use first names. Our faculty introduced themselves by their first names, and that's how they sign their communication (emails, announcements, etc.) with us. We are a small liberal arts college with a small faculty and small student population. At my previous college, a large state university, there are more PhD faculty who would probably be expected to be addressed as "Dr. So & So," but even there, many of the professors would like to be called by their first name. I think it just depends on the culture of the program and the institution itself.

I would never address a teacher by their first name, even though I'm older than some of them. It's just a respect thing for me.

I always say "Prof ___" or "Mrs. _____".

I wouldn't call them by their first name unless asked to do so.

We go by first names at my school. All of my instructors told us to call them whatever we wanted, but first names are preferred. I actually have an instructor who hates it when she's called Mrs or Professor. She's really young (35) and she said it makes her feel old when people call her by anything other than her first name.

One instructor does tell her students to call her Professor "X" in the classroom, but she tells her clinical group to call her by her first name. She's actually the only one in the school that does this that I know of.

All of my nursing instructors this far (semester 3 of 4) I have called by their first name because they have asked us to do so.

We were asked to call our instructors by their first name. It was really odd at first, but I've gotten used to it.

I address them by their title unless the explicitly ask to be called by their first names. I've had several that preferred, "Dr. D or Dr. W" to people misprouncing their last names. ;) They are 'Professor XYZ" otherwise. I can't recall calling an instructor by their first names.. I don't think you can go wrong with formal titles..

Professor or instructor LAST name! They made a big deal about this. We have a new nursing director this quarter and she insists on professionalism. However, every quarter before this one it was first name basis.

By first name except for the dean.

I still always use sir or ma'am though when being addressed by them.
