Did not pass the NET

Published

Hi everyone, I am so dissapointed because I failed the NET, not once but twice! I only have one more chance. If I don't pass this time I will not be allowed to take the test again for another year. I passed the math with flying colors, but the reading I failed by 2 points! I do have the NET book, but I must be studying it wrong or something. Now they are saying we will be taking the Hobet instead of the NET. I guess they are no longer using the NET test. Is there a difference? Do you think maybe I'm not smart enough for the nursing field? I really want to become an LPN. Any advice will help. Thanks all! :)

The reading section was horrible. You really have to study that to understand what they are talking about. It can be very confusing. Plus, the time limit is so stressful. I didn't finish all of my questions. I ended up passing the first time but I'm not sure my exact score.

I got the NET study guide from a fellow classmate and studied that for 4 days straight, mostly the reading. If you haven't read the study guide I would suggest borrowing it or buying it. It might be helpful to you.

Good luck! I would say half of the 30 people I tested with were there for their 4th or 5th time, all of them because of the reading section. So, don't give up yet. ;)

Hey StudentnurseAbby,

I am a nursing student too. I have failed our entrance exam which is called the HESI test 4 times due to the reading part.Last time only 8/10ths of a point. It is so frustrating. I heard some of you say you bought a study guide to help. Could you let me know what the study guide is called so maybe I can purchase this to maybe help me. I have already bought so many books but I would be willing to buy again if it will help. Most reading comp. study guides are totally different than what is on the test. Not fair. Thanks for the input.

Hi,

I failed the NET the first 2 times. I failed the reading portion by 4 points the first time and two points the second time. I got the Net/Hobet book from penn vally comm college. Most comm colleges sale them for $25-28.00. I also know you could get if from MSN.com or Amazon.com. Another web site I studied which is free is testprepreview.com, which is really helpful. I studied both the book and website everyday faithfully until the day of my test. For some reason when I first took the test my inferential reading was as low as 52%, but when I took the time to study faithfully everyday it jumped up to 85% the last time I took the test. Don't get me wrong I studied before I guess just not enough. Also, nerves could have played a roll. So good luck, and study, study, study! :) The book can cost up to $30.00, but you may beable to go on ebay or even this website to see if anyone is selling their used book.

I haven't taken the test yet because I don't feel prepared. When I studied the NET/HOBET book, I got almost every main idea question wrong. How can a person NOT know the main idea of a story? I found the testprepreview.com site and study it quite often. I am also taking a speed reading class before I even try to take the test. Hopefully, these things will help me pass.

hello! i signed up to take the net on august 9th. i'm scared to death because i haven't been in school 18 years and even then i was a horrible student. i realize that i have matured, want to go back to school and am willing to study and do whatever it takes to get into rn school.

question:  what is on the net? i keep reading it is only reading comprehension with about 30 plus questions & 60 math problems. is that correct or is there also a grammar and a spelling section???

i have the study guide for the net, the hobet, the help by robert d. frost. any advise would be grateful!

Hi! Wow...it sounds like the NET must be kinda hard! I am actually taking it this Thursday and I got the study guide from the Educational Resources, Inc. and I was wondering how similar the math and reading section is on the actual test in comparison to the study guide. Does anyone know? Does anyone recall how many questions the reading section has and how many question the math section has? And the time limits? Because I have another study guide for the NET as well, and they contradict each other! So I am going crazy trying to figure out which one I should listen to. Thanks!

That is the study guide I used. It was very helpful. I passed the first time. I found the reading to be challenging. I'm good at English usually but this was odd to me. The math was better. Mine was the written test, I had 30 minutes for the reading section, I believe. I could be wrong, I took it in January, it's hard to remember exactly. I don't remember how many questions there were but I know I still had 6 or so that I didn't have time to finish. I think you have a longer amount of time for the other sections.

I hope you do well on your last chance. Just add another hour of study a day to what you were doing, concentration on the reading. I wish you the best of luck.

I just passed the Math today!!!FINALLY!! Man I don't know why it was such a struggle. Mine was computerized and the timer was at the bottom of the screen which was very intimidating! Good luck to the rest of you!

I took the NET test at Cypress college last semester and I can honestly say it is one of the easiest tests I've ever taken.....I got in the 90th percentile in almost all of the categories and finished overall in the 99th percentile. I honestly don't see whats so difficult about the NET test. The math is mostly basic algebra and math skills......the reading comprehension is mostly deduction and being able to interpret a few passages.

hi! so i am taking the net tomorrow, so i will tell you exactly what is on the test. i also have a study guide that sort of mixes together three different tests and so it is hard to know what is exactly on the net because there is a verbal section in the book, chem, bio, etc...and all you need supposedly is to study math and reading! you might want to check on the requirement for your program though because some require that you also take the written expression part of the net as well...which some places offer and some don't. i don't need to take that part though for my program. just the normal net. anyways, i will let you know the nitty gritty about the test after i take it. i might start a new thread just so everyone who is taking the net can know to look at it.

You're really lucky, that sort of stuff must come easy to you but for other's it doesn't. No matter if you've just learned it, for a lot of people it's stressful to take a timed test or any test for that matter and they can't perform as well.

I did well too but there were plenty of people, about half, who had to retake the reading portion at my school. It all depends on the person I guess.

The director of nursing says that we have to pass the NET by a certain %tage but told me that she has seen people pass in the 80 and 90%tile bomb in nursing school and has also seen the opposite where someone who barely made it got all As and Bs in school. Just thought I would add that in :)
