i go to a private 4 year university that by the way is very expensive. i applied to their college of nursing for the spring of 2009. i received a letter of rejection this week. i was dumbfounded especially since my advisors repeatedly told me not to worry about acceptance into the program, furthermore the director of nursing also told me based on my grades i would not have a problem being accepted into the program. based on how competitive the schools here are and what the advisors told me i enrolled and started classes this fall. the school has 40 seats and only about 125 students apply which includes un-enrolled students. the school says that students are selected to the nursing program based on gpa and recommendations and they do give preference to anyone currently attending. my gpa is a 3.8 and i have a 4.0 gpa in all of my science classes and i have excellent letters of recommendation. my age group (40-49) within the university accounts for only about 4% of 5,500 students on campus, so needless to say, the average age is around 21. when i got my rejection letter, i first meet with two of my professors separately. both said they felt that i was rejected based on my age and my gpa and recommendations may not have been considered. each said they felt i did not fit into the mold of nurses the school may want to produce. one said he would lose his job if i ever told anyone he said this. anyway, i went and meet with the nursing school director and asked why i was not accepted. she did not know me and at first did not ask my name. she said that the lowest gpa was a 3.6, which is why i may not have been selected. she went on to say that they looked closely at the science scores and then at the recommendations. after she was finished, i told her i still did not understand because i had a 3.8 gpa and 4.0 gpa in all of my science classes and i had excellent letters of recommendations. she looked a bit shocked and looked up my name. she finally said that they had given preference to the length of time the students had attended the university. she also said first semester transfer students, which i am, were not given preference and known were accepted. she said i was an excellent candidate and to apply again next year. apply again next year is crap! i am completely done with all the classes i need to graduate and unless i am enrolled in this school, i can't apply next year. it would cost me $11k each semester to take classes i don't even need. every school in the area that i live is highly competitive and i don't have the option to move. this year the local public university did not take anyone with less than an overall 4.0 gpa. i am ****** off. i don't want to believe i was not chosen because of my age but can't understand why they have changed the rules.... i know of two students that got accepted last year as first semester transfer students but unfortunately i don't know anyone else in the college of nursing nor do i know anyone who is applying this year. i have an appointment to meet with the dean. i want to ask for the demographics of the students selected --- what is the chance they will give me that? and is it even worth my breath to try and fight a system that doesn't want me? the college of nursing should be admitting the best candidates, period, not based on the length of time the person has attended the university. any advise?????

it's funny to hear everyone worrying about being the oldest in their class. i am actually the oldest in all of my classes and actually love it. i would have never thought that i would have great friends that are in there 20's. i am old enough to be most of these kids mom --- most of them come to me for advice, help studying, etc..... it's great especially when i see a kid grow up and learn to take pride in what they are doing. many of the kids i am in school with don't get a lot of support/advise from parents and friends. for all of you worried about going back to school when you are older --- don't worry --- i think i am a better student now than had i pursed a nursing career in my 20's. i love being in school now....... a very positive thing about me being back in school is that it has helped my 16 year old son study more. we actually sit done and do homework together and i think he feels really good when he can actually tutor me on things -- he feels even better when i pull an a in that class. i am not married but have dated someone for over four years. he does get a bit "jealous" because i study and spend a lot of time in class. one thing i always remind myself is that i am going back to school to please myself --- not anyone else! i spent my life worrying about everyone but myself.

cary, i live on the west coast of florida and like everywhere else every school is very competitive. i would think that if you have an excellent gpa or at least a 3.8 you should have no problem getting into the fiu nursing program. it also helps that you are a current student and as long as your grades are very good the committee will look at you over a student outside your school. one thing to keep in mind is that most schools do not have so called “waiting lists”. keiser university is the only school over in my area with a “waiting list”, all of the others have a “pool of people” that are picked from based on grades, etc…… with a “pool” you could reapply every year and never get into the nursing school…… i enrolled at keiser university and went through ½ way through the radiology program in may when i realized that i truly wanted to go into nursing. i have a spot for january 2009 nursing program, however because i thought i had to sit out a couple of semesters i enrolled at the university of tampa. there are two reasons i am pursing the ut nursing program, first they offered me a large scholarship and second is i can complete the nursing program in the same amount of time as keiser but come out with a bsn. i already have all my pre-reg for a 4 year degree….. anyway, keiser university is a great school, although it’s on the high side as far as tuition. their rn program is 18 months long. i know there is a school in your area and if you have all your pre-reqs done you would most likely get bumped up on their “wait list”. my actual nursing core spot was for fall 2009 and i was offered a spot for this fall but turned it down since i was already enrolled at ut – they then put me into a spot for jan 2009. i truly have nothing bad to say about keiser university and have many friends graduating from the rn program this month who are very happy with the school. the negative sides of the school are of course the cost and you must be dedicated to school because the program moves extremely fast. good luck!

i am currently attending keiser university and love it. it is very expensive but i think worth it since there is a lack of colleges out there with short waiting lists for rn programs. the sizes of the classes are excellent and the professors help a lot!! i have run across some of the recruiting personnel that give you a line when looking at the school. just do your research when looking at schools! after college i plan to take advantage of the florida loan forgiveness program!!! and i'm thankful that i have gotten $20k in scholarships. one thing i can say is apply for any scholarship you can!!!

wow! i am surprised and disappointed about the visit kniru23 had at keiser college. i went to the lakeland campus and was very impressed. they would not give me any information over the phone but i met with a very professional counselor --- i didn't sit through an information session. it is expensive however other private colleges that i have looked into are in the same price range --- my first degree which was 19 years ago cost somewhere in the same range (based on the yearly increase of tuition each year).

My math was 91 and my reading was 65 which I was very uphappy about. Like I said I read all the time --- It was just different..... Were are you in Florida? And what school are you trying to get into?

I have applied for the RN progran at Keiser College - Lakeland. I actually took the NET today, passed and have a spot in the January 2008 class --- I am on the waitlist for the 2007 classes and was told I have a good chance of getting into the Fall 2007 class. In the meatime I have a few classes to take. The cost of the program is high but I like the fact that it is small. Anyone else attending or has graduated from there?????

I took the NET today and passed. Read/study the ERI study guide -- all of the information in it is exactely what to expect on the test. I have not been in college in 20 years and was really happy that I brushed up on everyting -- don't wait until the last minute. For me the math was easy but the reading was hard however I did have an average score. I read all the time but the reading part was different and the ERI study guide saved my life! Good luck.

I took the NET today and passed. I have to say the ERI study guide was a great help. I did not ace the test but received an average score. The math for me was easy once I brushed up on everything. The reading on the other hand was not so easy. I read all the time but for some reason this part of the test was hard for me however I got an average score. All I can say is study ERI study guide until you know everything in it......

after graduating high school i told my parents i wanted to be a nurse and my mom told me i wouldn't like it because she went to nursing school and hated it. they told me they would not pay for me to go to nursing school so i went into accounting. i've been an accountant for 20 years now and have always hated it but pays the bills. sometime around age 26 i enrolled in nursing school and my in-laws talked me out of it -- saying it was to hard for me, long hours, etc, etc... now i'm 40 and am in a situation where i am able to quit my job and do what i have always wanted to do --- i'm applying to rn school. i take the net tomorrow and if i score well enough i'll start next fall. do what you want not what others think you should do --- i reject not following my gut............ good luck!

i applied to south university in tampa and planned to start classes the first of august however since signing up i re-evaluated the extremely high tuition. they will not transfer many of my classes from 20 years ago which means i have to take a bunch of classes over again (i don’t blame them for some of them) --- basically i am starting over which could cost me about $70k. of course they can’t guarantee acceptance into their program even after taking all the prerequisites – so that being said i decided not to attend. i have applied to keiser college in lakeland and will be taking the net in two weeks which i’m nervous about. as long as i pass that i’ll have a guaranteed spot on the waiting list for fall 2007 which i was told is a short waiting list. they are transferring more of my classes and i’ll be done by the spring with prerequisites and the cost of the program will be about $40k. so i’m studying like crazy for the net…………….:studyowl:

:studyowl: Thanks for the info. I will be taking the NET in two weeks and am studying as hard as I can. I'm just feeling a little stupid --- I've been an accountant for 20 years and still have to brush up on my math a lot -- I've used a calculator and computer so long I can hardly do things long hand! I have the Study Guide for The NET.................... THANKS!

I will take the NET in a couple of weeks. After all the research I've done and what the director of my school told me a good book is: Study Guide for The NET by Michael D. Frost. I was told that only Reading Comprehension & Basic Math are on the NET. I have several books including the CliffsTestPrep and will study only certain sections out of all the others. Good Luck!
