Could you see yourself being anything else besides a nurse?

If you were to pick another profession or if nursing didn't work out, what other professions can you see yourself doing? Or is nursing the only thing you can envision.. I know many people who say "they could never imagine doing anything else.

Specializes in Mental Health Nursing.

Definitely a psychiatrist. I may just do it lol.

Teaching. Definitely teaching. I've ever considered teaching in nursing school. But then talked myself out of it. :specs:

Specializes in peds, allergy-asthma, ob/gyn office.

I would be a writer/journalist. I was strongly inclined that way in high school, newspaper staff, UIL competitor. However, I was too shy to enjoy interviewing people for stories. Now it would be easy!

Specializes in Nurse Leader specializing in Labor & Delivery.

Now I have the song Dancing Nancies going through my head.

I could've been a philosopher or a psychiatrist or an Empath reader. But I don't think I would've been happy? Working only 3 days a week, being able to travel anywhere and have a job, and still have good money in my pocket is all I ever really wanted out of a career. lol Everything else (like not working at the bedside anymore, getting more education, etc) is a bonus!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I could envision myself fulfilling many other roles. Nursing is, to me, a more practical and stable way of ensuring that ends meet.

1. Writer/novelist

2. Traveling food critic

3. Professional student

I decided I wanted to be a nurse when I was 10. I have never considered other options, and it's kind of terrifying that if I can't get through school I have no back up plan. I love fashion and writing but those are not exactly realistic options. I would most likely just work as an MST. I truly love the patient care aspect of being a CNA and if I could make more money doing that I would almost consider it. But being a pediatric nurse is what I'm meant to do so I don't care how long it takes I will get through nursing school!

Specializes in LTC Rehab Med/Surg.

Aside from doing nothing, which I'm very good at and enjoy, the happiest work I've ever done was college.

I hadn't thought of it until I read TheCommuter's post

I could be a professional student if I won the Lotto.

Specializes in School Nursing, Telemetry.

I was considering social work before deciding on nursing and could see myself doing that if I was not a nurse.

I have also said more than once that if I wasn't a nurse, I would consider culinary school and becoming a pastry chef of some kind, as I have always enjoyed being creative in the kitchen.

Dream job, maybe an editor or something of the sort at a large book publisher. The idea of being paid to read books/morificecripts is amazing to me...

Yeah, being a professional student would be a fantastic job!

What a great and fun question! I've actually given it some thought over the years. I most likely would've wound up in one of the social sciences, or as a history teacher. Or maybe a yoga instructor. I think I would've liked that.

Pro student would be awesome! I've said before I'd be in school forever if it weren't go gosh darn expensive. I love fluffy lib arts classes like art history, women's studies, would love to do art and short story writing and all kinds of stuff.
