Could you see yourself being anything else besides a nurse?

Published

If you were to pick another profession or if nursing didn't work out, what other professions can you see yourself doing? Or is nursing the only thing you can envision.. I know many people who say "they could never imagine doing anything else.

Specializes in L&D.

If nursing doesn't pan out, id love to be a highschool volleyball/track coach and a teacher.

This is my second career and am glad I went into it. With nursing you can do so much and go into administration, marketing, sales, education, research....you name it and you can use you nursing degree and experiences in any other fields also. So I am glad I went into it...

Love my nursing career. Can't imagine doing anything else.

If I had to do it all over again and nursing wasn't an option, I would be either a psychiatrist or a marriage/family therapist.

I worked in accounting for 15 years and in sales/marketing for 10. If I couldn't do nursing anymore. I'll have something to fall back on.

Specializes in geriatrics.

I wanted to be a dietician and sometimes I feel that I should have taken that route instead. I chose nursing because of the diversity, but with all the cutbacks, there are fewer opportunities.

That and I refuse to work any of the floors the way they are staffed.

Specializes in Nurse Leader specializing in Labor & Delivery.

Yep, I can see myself doing many different things. I think I would be able to bloom wherever I'm planted. Some things I could do (or have done):

Writer

Newspaper editor

Bread baker

Veterinarian

Physician

Tax Accountant

Pastry Chef

Dog Groomer

Herbalist

Specializes in public health, women's health, reproductive health.

I'm just starting out in my nursing career and I hope it works out. There are other things I could see myself doing if nursing were off the table for some reason, like being a counselor, social worker, writer, or some other work in healthcare. But nursing is my second career and a big accomplishment for me. So right now, it's all I can see doing.

Specializes in Hospice.

I always wanted to be a lawyer, my father, however, wanted me to be a doctor. I went into nursing instead, so I would go to law school.

If nursing doesn't pan out, id love to be a highschool volleyball/track coach and a teacher.

Just make sure you really shadow a teacher and get a feel for the profession... Its not a pretty rough career these days.

I can think of a few that I could envision myself doing and loving, although for one reason or another (not enough pay, location, etc) I chose not to. Never know what the future holds though ;)

Cosmetologist (I love all things hair, makeup, etc)

Forensic pathologist

Forensic analyst (DNA, fingerprints, firearms)

Journalist

Professional photographer

Proprietor of a bookstore

Financial advisor

Pharmacist

Every career aptitude/personality test I've taken since high school always suggested surgeon as one of the top two or three careers for me. If I had to do it over again, I would have followed that path....I really feel that I would enjoy being a surgeon. I haven't entirely ruled it out at this point in life; my husband encourages me to follow my dreams no matter how daunting they may be, but I'm not sure I'm willing to make the sacrifices (or ask that my family make the sacrifices) required to be successful in that pursuit.

I never intended to be a nurse. I have a lot of hobbies and passions and wanted to find a job in one of those fields. An artist, a dog handler, a photographer... I did pursue horse training for a long time. Then I realized that I hate running my own business, most of all marketing myself, and that is usually required when one attempts to turn a hobby into a business.

I wanted something interesting but where I could leave work at work for the most part. Nursing is an ideal job for me for a lot of reasons. So in that sense, even though it wasn't originally my top choice, no I can't see myself doing anything else.

... Except for being independently wealthy with enough extra income to pursue my many hobbies :whistling: If I must work, this is the work I want.
