CON withholding proof of graduation!!!!

Hello all! I am in a predicament and am not sure what to do. I graduated this month with my BSN. Now my college is forcing my class to take further NCLEX preparation and has told us they will not send my affidavit of graduation (AOG) to the BON until we do so and the earliest they will send it is in June. This new "requirement" was sprung on us right before graduation and not in the School handbook. In previous documents I have from the school, the college was supposed to send our AOG the next business day after graduating.

I passed the HESI exit exam as required... I really wanted to take the NCLEX at the end of this month and am furious that they would do this to their students. Their past published 5 years of NCLEX pass rates have been at or above the necessary 80%, so I'm unsure what the issue is.

Has anyone had a similar experience and if so what did you do? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Most schools require you to do an NCLEX prep class. Just do it.

Really?? I've never heard of this. Being required that is, I have heard of NCLEX prep classes. Do the students have to pay extra for this?

Yes and yes. It was required of me 20 years ago, and I paid extra for it.

I don't see how they can make students do further "required" coursework after graduation. If you graduated, you graduated... As in you have the degree whether or not you pass NCLEX. Plus, even if you do the prep class and are not proficient enough to the prep classes standards, what then? Are they going to further delay sending your information to the state?

Although it would peeve me too, I would just oblige by their last minute rules. Even though it isn't stated in the handbook, don't make enemies this late in the game. Just follow their silly rules, pass NCLEX, get a job, and don't look back. It is their, seemingly fine, reputation they are tarnishing.

My class graduated in mid-December. My school was reprimanded by the board for not turning in final grades to the board before the holiday when every other school did. There was a pinch for jobs, and we were put at a distinct disadvantage when other students had their licenses by the time we got our authorizations to test.

I have never heard of a school requiring an NCLEX prep program, and I don't see how they can legally withhold grades if you have completed the requirements for graduation. My opinion is that if it isn't in the handbook and there was no prior notification of it, they can't enforce it. I would discuss this with the nursing board.

Same thing happened to someone I know. A lot of people were put behind the employment curve, but the testing company got their fees and I suppose the school got its cut, the important consideration you know. Only thing you can do is to comply.

LovingLife 123, RN - You are right, it would be easier to just comply. However, I didn't mention that we have been doing Kaplan since day one. Also in my last semester my were required to take a NCLEX prep class that counted for credit hours, and conveniently had a bunch of review classes scheduled during finals week. After finals, we also had to attend the 4 day Kaplan review course. So it's pretty frustrating...

Same thing happened to someone I know. A lot of people were put behind the employment curve, but the testing company got their fees and I suppose the school got its cut, the important consideration you know. Only thing you can do is to comply.

I definitely feel like this is what's going on with my school too. It sucks, because it's not only inconvenient to my plans I've made, but it also definitely puts my class at a disadvantage in getting a job since many are supposed to start working in May.

Sounds like the school wants to raise their pass rates...at or above 80%...my ASN had a 98-100% pass rate running years strong.

I know it's got to be frustrating but there's a reason for the push. You're just not privy to the reason. Just wait until you actually pass the NCLEX and get a nursing job, you're gonna have to deal with management barraging you with constant change and expectations with a no questions asked mentality (for the most part).

Just focus on the things you can control and try to blow off the added stress of the things you can't. Good luck with the NCLEX!

Unbelievable and really sad that a majority of us feel it is best to just comply. I can not believe that is even legal.

Yes and yes. It was required of me 20 years ago, and I paid extra for it.

At my school, it was only required if your exit HESI was under a certain score.
