Columbia ETP 2015

Published

Has anyone started a thread yet? The application is due in 174 days and as you can see I'm already obsessing.

Anyone else?!

A little bit about me...

Im from California, graduated from UCLA and only applied to Columbia. My GRE scores were low and my GPA was average so don't let these things discourage you! I did have a lot of volunteer experience during my undergraduate years and a few publications in journals so maybe that helped!

Good luck to you all!

I just graduated from UCLA as a PhySci major! It's nice to see some West Coasters. :) My GRE scores weren't great but I did graduate with honors so hopefully my GPA will help even it out. I did Care Extenders for 3 years and did research but no publications (that's very impressive!). What would you say Columbia considers its ideal candidate? I'm doing some last minute revisions on my Personal Statement so I'm just trying to enhance what I can, at this point.

Good luck to everyone! & thanks in advance!

hey guys!

I'm a current ETPer and remember how many questions I had throughout the application process and the time time between acceptance and enrollment- I'm happy to answer any questions you have! I'm also not a New Yorker (from the Midwest) so I'm happy to answer any questions about moving, adjusting etc etc too :)

Is anyone going to the information session tomorrow?

Please let us know about it if you go! I'm in California so I can't

Hey, everyone! So I just finished up at the info session about an hour ago. Everyone was so incredibly nice and personable. Definitely ask them any questions you have. They're more than happy to help!

On to what they talked about. First they discussed the program itself, which I'm sure all of you know what that entails. They said approximately 800 students apply and only 200 get in. Out of that 200, 10 seats are set aside for CRNA and 20 seats for Nurse Widwife. The other 170 seats go to any of the NP specialties, however they see fit.

If you plan to go the DNP route, you can apply during the program and start taking courses through the MS. If you plan to do the PhD route, you skip the MS all together.

They have a 91-95% NCLEX pass rate.

The curriculum is intense. They emphasized not working during the program and not making any major life changes such as moving, getting married, etc.

One thing I found to be the best part of the program: the last semester of ETP you are 1 on 1 with a nurse in your specialty for March-May. Such a great perk that only Columbia has.

As for financial aid - for the first year (ETP) you're considered a 5th year undergraduate. For the MS portion you're graduate. There are scholarship and loan options for everyone, which is great. Approximately 90% of ETP students receive their Pre-Lincensure Undergraduate Scholarship which is based on your FAFSA.

They ended with the admissions process. Make sure your prerequisites will be finished by the start of the program. For the application they can be put in as the date you plan to start them, whichever semester that is. If you're accepted they'll need the official transcripts from prerequisite institutions as well as all other institutions.

I think that's all the major stuff. Any questions let me know. I might be able to answer them. Otherwise you can email admissions. They've been nothing but helpful.

Good luck!!!!!

Thanks so much! This is very helpful info!

Thank you! :)

Not looking forward to an intense curriculum, but hope we can do it (assuming we get in...)!

Thanks for summing it up!! Did they have any specifically great points for the PMHNP program?

Nothing specific. However, the amount of people who were there today specifically for psych was more than they usually get at the info sessions. I dunno what that means for us haha

Hey Divalicious! Thanks for the info for us West Coasters. Did they address the following?

Was the number of psych hopefuls dramatically higher than normal? Makes me nervous!

Did they say anything helpful about the personal statement?

Did someone ask whether to enter every prereq you've ever taken for each category, or just the most recent? I'll email on this point if no one got an answer.

Nothing specific about psych; just what I posted above about there being a larger number at the actual info session. Nothing about applications though.

Personal statement they mentioned to just really make them know who you are as an individual. They wanted to see how well rounded every applicant is. So this also includes the resume. They said to add interests and hobbies on there. Mention if you speak other languages, if you travel to other countries, etc. (On the resume, not personal statement.) Tell them who you are as a person. They also suggested sending your personal statement to your recommenders so they know exactly who you are/where you hope to go. I did not do this. Oh well.

No one mentioned posting all classes that satisfy one prerequisite. I don't believe they want you to put every single one. Just one class per prerequisite is fine. I used the courses I got the highest grades in.

Hope this helped!

I didn't put languages or traveling on the resume because I didn't think it seemed that relevant. Eh...

I sort of mentioned them on my personal statement because I did go overseas for a little bit to volunteer though. Hope that works.

I got an email a few days ago saying that my application will be reviewed soon. I'm so nervous!
