  1. Hi everyone, I hope this will be an okay place to post this. I'm in need of some advice. I'm in Columbia's ETP program and am 2 months away from graduating with a BSN. From June 2016- August 2018, I'll be doing my MSN in psych to become a PMHNP. I'll hopefully pass the NCLEX this summer and begin working as a psych RN for the duration of the program Coming to New York from CA has been a tough transition to put it mildly. Today, I started to seriously considering transferring to UCSF's MSN program in psych. I don't even really know if this is possible... I didn't have the pre-reqs necessary to apply to UCSF's MEPN and I had my heart set on Columbia anyway. I am excited to begin my psych training, but I'd love to do it closer to home. Does anyone have any experience with this particular situation? I guess the biggest thing I'm wondering about is how hard it will be to transition from NY to CA if I stay with the program. It would be comforting to know that it wouldn't be a hellish process. I think if I knew I wouldn't have a horrible time getting my license and finding work, I'd feel a lot better. I have to get (RN) license in NY in order to work here during the master's, but I plan on going back to CA immediately upon finishing the MSN in fall 2018. I see that 30 hours of pharmacology are required for a DEA #... I think Columbia would be sufficient, but I'm not 100% sure. I heard California can be finicky and takes a long while to process paperwork. Lots of people from our program supposedly go to California, so I can't imagine it would be prohibitive.... If anyone has any input, I'd be incredibly grateful. Thanks so much :)
  2. Oh man, I can't believe this is happening so dramatically in other places too. Hopefully those of us with prior psych experience and a passion for MH will shine through as far as jobs and everything go. Maybe I'm a starry eyed idealist but I don't see how you could become a pmhnp without loving it. Sounds like everyone will suffer if this becomes a thing
  3. I agree- it's such a scary thought in a field that you have to be fully dedicated to. People can switch MS specialties at Columbia during this year, which I think is a bad idea. I wrote my essay based on my love of mental health and I don't think people should be allowed to switch on a whim when someone mentions the salary or whatever
  4. That's so stressful. I came into this program believing that it was somewhat of a niched field. I feel like all of the sudden it became "cool," which is vexing to me, since I've been interested for years and worked really hard to get in.
  5. Hi! I'm in Columbia's ETP class. I'm on the psych track, so I'll be graduating in 2018. Out of 220 of us in the program, I think around 30 are on the psych track. This is notably high compared to past years, where there were only 10-15 aspiring PMHNPs. I'm concerned about this. Does anyone notice this trend at their schools?
  6. Does anyone get rejected for private loans?
  7. Did anyone get that weird "columbia application now available" email?
  8. There are 226 people in the facebook group, but I think that includes some administrators and a few people currently in the program. Also, some people have written things like "help me decide between Columbia and x school...." so it's a safe bet that not everyone will end up attending.
  9. Weeding people out?! How? I shouldn't have read that blog... the last post really stressed me out. Seems like a worst case scenario situation On a lighter note, do we not need to send in official transcripts? I used my official ones for 2 of my 4 universities anyway, but I was just wondering...
  10. I'm kinda late to the game but I wanted to share their response to my Hep B vaccine concerns- as long as you have the first 2 by the April 27 deadline, you're fine!
  11. I applied for the 2-person suite as my first choice but it didn't differentiate on the application. I hope it's the 2 people/2 bedrooms, not the 2 people/1 bedroom!
  12. Thanks Matthew! That's a good idea.
  13. I'm incredibly stressed about the health screening. All I know is that I had the vaccines necessary to enter school in 1995. I don't think I've had hep B or hep C. I don't even live in the state I grew up in. I can't make an appointment out here yet (no doctor btw so I have to find somewhere) because I won't know what I need until my mom does some digging.
  14. Anyone have any insight on the best equipment package to buy? I'm not trying to spend $200, but I want to make sure buying the cheaper packages won't leave me lacking. I'm a little confused about how they're calculating costs because if you look on the med bookstore site, everything required (except the high end stethoscopes) are pretty cheap.
  15. Agree! I'm already getting a little antsy about housing
