Columbia ETP 2015

Published

Has anyone started a thread yet? The application is due in 174 days and as you can see I'm already obsessing.

Anyone else?!

Hi Mammal,

Oakland - cool! I have a lot of family in San Francisco so I often visit your side of the world. I live in Harlem (as u can probably already guess - :)), 5-10 minutes away from Columbia's main campus so I'm staying put even though the nursing school is further away. To put it into some sort of perspective - main campus is around 116th street (known as Morningside Heights), General Harlem area is 125th street and nursing school is 168th street (Washington Heights area). These areas are generally the more affordable parts of Manhattan, though be forewarned, real estate prices in NYC tend to be a little crazy (similar to SF) -- if you want to get a general idea, definitely check out NYC Apartments for Rent â€" New York City Rentals | StreetEasy and tick off Washington Heights, Harlem and Morningside Heights for location.

I was told that Columbia offers student housing also for out-of-state students and it tends to be more affordable/below market (don't hold me to this, though, since it's hearsay) but it's limited. Anyway, if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask .

Thanks for the Response Harlem,

I currently live in Oakland Ca. Born and raised on the west coast in a town of 5000 people. NY will most definitely will be an adjustment. Im looking at apartments as close to campus as possible. I was thinking about renting a two bedroom and just get a nursing or med student as a roommate. Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Side note, where in NY do you live? Will you move our commute?

Someone please tell me I'm not the only one applying to just Columbia. It's scary putting all my eggs in one basket, but it's where I want to go.

I also haven't submitted, as the pressure of a deadline helps me do my best work :) Anyone else the same?

In my perspective, I just want to get into a program so I'm applying to 9 programs. If you are okay with the chance of not getting in and having to re-apply next year again that's your choice. I think it depends on your stats too. My GPA isn't that high so I'm applying to more programs. I would apply to a couple other programs in case so you can still enroll in a program and continue your studies in case you don't want to be waiting another year. That's my opinion though.

I haven't submitted either by the way! I'm working on the personal statement.

@sophs12, I'm also only applying to Columbia so we're def in the same boat.. All our eggs in one basket. I really want to get in and I'm trying not to get my hopes up considering I'm focusing only on Columbia at the moment but it's hard. I look at it this way, If I get in then OMG it would honestly be the greatest feeling… but if I don't, it's just not my time yet… I'll continue to work and apply for 2016 along with other schools.. but for right now Columbia is my first and only choice.. I've dreamed about my acceptance letter for years! lol

Oh and to everyone who's from out of town, I am a native New Yorker (Lower East Side of Manhattan) so if anyone's in town and needs some pointers feel free to ask =)… I really hope to get in and maybe meet you all =)!!

I'm applying to a lot of programs (around 9 or so as well) because I just want to get in somewhere. I really don't want to wait until another year because I'm afraid that DNP mandate or whatever will take place and I would have to spent even more years in school to become an NP. Time seems to be running out :/

GuiltyLove you have a point there. I may apply to NYU for their Accelerated BSN program then NP but they're app is due in Feb and they have rolling admission which is great. Does anyone know of any other schools that offer a program similar to Columbia? Unfortunately I am stuck in the North East region of the country bc of finances and family

Gradschoolmeg, Yale has an MSN program for students with non - nursing bachelor's. You do a year of pre-licensure, then sit for the NCLEX, then go straight into their MSN. The deadline is Saturday though. :/

Oh, another question for everyone. Say you've taken multiple courses for one category of prereq. I've taken two stats classes and two writing courses. Are you all listing every semester, or just the most recent/more advanced course?

Gradschoolmeg, I am only applying to direct-entry/accelerated NP programs. I applied to Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia, U of Rochester and Mass Gen Hospital Institute of Health Professions. They all have the same pre-reqs, so if you applied to Columbia you could probably apply to any of those. But Divalicious is right, the deadline is tomorrow!

Except for two schools. MGH's deadline is January 1st. Vandy has rolling admissions, but I'm guessing that's out of the picture if you need to stay in the north east.

Hey, I applied to those schools too, except for Rochester :p

I'm not sure sophs12. I would probably list the one I got the best grade in and that satisfies the requirements still. I think you can call/e-mail them for more advice.
