Had a kid bring his wet, bloody tooth and plop it right on my desk.
C'mon now!
Or the kid that did running knee slide into my office.
C'mon now!
The ones old enough to cover their mouths but choose to cough right in your face instead.
All together: C'mon now!!
Some things just make me shake my head.
Kid: *holding arm* my arm hurts.
Me: Oh, why?
Kid: From coloring too much.
Seriously. I just sent an email to teachers yesterday to not send crap like this (worded much nicer though) since the flu has hit and my office is FULL of actual sick kids all the time. You just sent a perfectly healthy kid into the lion's den!

THIS!! How does one word this nicely? So much energy is wasted on the kids who have "nosebleeds" without a single drop of blood visible.....that and many other ridiculous complaints. How to deter this without offending?

The email I sent yesterday went something like this
"Hey all! If a kiddo comes back to you quickly after you sent them to me, it isn't because I didn't see or assess them. With the amount of sickness that is going around, it's likely that the health room seating was occupied with students with high fevers/coughs/vomiting/etc. If your student does not have one of theses ailments, I will send them back to class in hopes of keeping them healthy.
As always, please encourage frequent hand-washing and sanitizing, and maintaining personal space. If you have a child that you know is out because of an illness, it would be a good idea to do an extra sanitizing of your classroom on top of what the custodians do.
Thank you so much for all you do! -Oy-"
(Our custodians, God love em', don't clean that well. So I always add to make sure the teachers are helping by wiping things down).

Sounds great!

Unfortunately, this wording is too vague. It sounds really nice, but most people only care about themselves. I would reword it to say pretty bluntly that you wish to reduce the spread of the flu by reducing the exposure of healthy children in your office that will in turn, come back to YOUR class and infect those in the room.
I had a 4th grade girl sent to my office just now. She was crying and upset. Teachers were worried, I'm worried. Knowing this kid's family, mom and dad are in a middle of a divorce and the other children are fine with it, but she has been giving mother issues because she prefers dad (Gets all she wants). I haven't heard what happened, but I'm guessing mother stayed with children because this was told like months ago that they were fighting in court to who gets custody.
Anyways, LD comes in office, upset. I think it's something going on with divorce. I ask child, what's wrong? She doesn't want to tell me, she just wants to sit there and cry. I call parent, explaining what's going on. MOm tells me, "OMG. She's been crying since this morning because she doesn't want to wear her new shoes." Apparently she doesn't like her expensive Jordans because they were... pink. My expression was basically:
I thank the mother and I look at the kid and I'm like, "Really? Shoes? You're crying over the color of the shoes?" She just gives me this small smile and I'm like, really? I tell her to stop her crying, it's just shoes. You can get an exchange later, but for now deal with them. They are cool shoes. She calms down and automatically stops crying and leaves. Before she leaves I say, "I love pink btw, that's some good shoes. I wish I could have them!" She just smiles and leaves.
C'MON NOW!
I had a teacher send a kiddo this morning with a note that said, "He burned his arm this weekend!! Can you look at it?"
Kiddo has a perfectly adequate looking dressing on arm, clean & intact. No c/o pain. Kiddo is able to describe what happened & it's a perfectly reasonable explaination. He described how mom took care of it & sit sounds good to me.
No. No, I won't. I told him to come back if it starts hurting or if his dressing starts coming unraveled.

Oh... the bane of Monday mornings. "Arm is bruised from the weekend. Says Mom knows but can you check?"
Check what? To make sure it's not broken with my X-ray vision? I kind of get it. From a caring perspective it makes sense and we are seen as health experts. But there are those Mondays where it's like every student who came back even a little bit altered from how they were on Friday has to be checked out by me personally to make sure parents did not ruin them over the weekend

Hey Friends- This isn't funny. A couple of summers ago, I spent almost the entire week sitting under my favorite beautiful shade tree at Church Camp, enjoying the kids, adults, creation and.... coloring...... I gave myself Tennis Elbow. Stupidest reason ever. But, it really happened. Just in the last few months has it gotten better. I feel for the kid!

Little one comes in: "I can't breathe! I haven't been able to breath since yesterday morning when we (insert 2 minute story here)"
Me: Well it looks like you are breathing great right now with how well you are talking.
LO: "Well that was the problem before, now my throat really hurts"
Me: ::Checks and sees a nice normal pink throat:: "Your throat looks perfect"
LO: "Well I know it's not that bad but just thinking about it gives me a headache"
Me: "The best cure for a headache is putting your head down on your desk. Go head back to class"
He argued a bit more, but C'Mon now little one.
