Had a kid bring his wet, bloody tooth and plop it right on my desk.

C'mon now!

Or the kid that did running knee slide into my office.

C'mon now!

The ones old enough to cover their mouths but choose to cough right in your face instead.

All together: C'mon now!!

Some things just make me shake my head.

*7th grader comes asks for a pad, 1st grader watches*

1st grader: The grossest thing about a woman is that the diapers they have to wear between their legs. Why do they have to wear that?

Me: *quietly trying to no to laugh*

My boys knew that answer at six, and didn't find it gross. Life with two nurse parents.

Oh, my boy knows this too. He saw me throw one away and he just casually replied, "You're on your period again?" I did explain to not talk about this to his dad (my older brother, his son, my nephew) and outside of the house. So he keeps his mouth shut, but we won't do any more of these teaching until he's maybe 10?

My family is slight conservative so we keep these talks to a minimum until they get to that right age. My niece already knew about periods at 7 because she became to question me more about it and also because she's starting to develop more now. But we mainly do these talks around 5th grade and the more detailed version at 7th grade, but I might have to have the talk earlier than this because on how more... "advanced" these kids are and I don't want them to learn about sex from friends and afraid to ask me questions.

T Minus 3 hours to spring break. Kid comes after falling off her chair and bumping her head. No tears, "hurts a little bit," no lump, no concussion symptoms. Teacher gives me a look and whispers to me in the hallway "concerned mom." So I give the kid ice, email mom about what happened, and assure her that her snowflake is just fine. Mom says "How did she fall? Her teacher needs to watch for signs of lethargy. If she is lethargic we will pick her up ASAP!!!!"

Our spring break has started, my wife manned the fort for our half day. Not one customer. Amazing how half days make all the issues go away.

I wonder about this a lot. Most of my staff here are parents and sometimes I look at the little ones they have sent to me (over and over) and I wonder how they handle their own child?

Is every tummy ache a medical emergency?

Do they go to the doctor to see if a bug bite is actually a staph infection?

Do they trust their thermometer or go to the ED because their child "feels so hot!"?

Do they change their child every time they spill while eating?

So many questions lol

I've found that many teachers are afraid to NOT send their students to the nurse. They are afraid of the wrath of the parents. Sad, because they are only hurting their kids more, and adding to their sense of entitlement. Oy.

1st grader comes in tears into my office with note that says "student will explain".

Little one explains how someone bumped into her and she fell backwards onto the playground. I asked what hurt and she burst into more tears and said "the rocks!" I finally calm her down enough to get her to explain that SHE is fine, but I need to go and check on the rocks because she hurt them.

The C'mon isn't at this little angel, but at the teacher who didn't handle the situation there!

i hope the rocks were ok :D

I wonder the same thing! This week Ive done nothing but look at 4 day old scabs, 2 day old bruises, bug bites from this weekend and of course this is all stuff from at home. In my staff email for next year I am going to include do not send me students with injuries that happened at home. If mom and dad didnt see fit to fix it at home then what am I supposed to do. And the bug bite thing kills me. They itch, yes it can be awful but it doesnt require a trip to the nurse and cream every time. I finally took that teacher several packs of hydrocortisone cream and said "Since your class seems to get itchies alot." haha

Also biggest pet peeve ever "They feel warm to me!" To which I reply "Well thats good, if they were cold they would be dead."

YES, Another new T-Shirt!

I have one teacher in particular who I bump heads with because she will tell the little ones that they have a fever, and in the past she bought a thermometer to try and prove me wrong, but she thinks anything above 99.0 is a fever!!

I need to print some up I think! Would make a great #schoolnurse shirt!
