C'Mon Now!

Had a kid bring his wet, bloody tooth and plop it right on my desk.

C'mon now!

Or the kid that did running knee slide into my office.

C'mon now!

The ones old enough to cover their mouths but choose to cough right in your face instead.

All together: C'mon now!!

Some things just make me shake my head.

3rd grader enters clinic with arms at his sides "I have a really bad nose bleed"

Me: Currently?

3rd: "Yeah, right now"

Me: No, you don't. There is no blood...anywhere...

3rd: "Well, fine"

and he left. *shrug* C'Mon Now!

So today is my Monday. Spring Break was last week and my kiddo's district was out yesterday as well (staff development) so he and I got an extra day! WOOT!

Before we went on break though, I had scheduled a local mobile asthma clinic to visit two of my campuses. I was informed yesterday (via conversations with the program coordinator) that one campus (not my home campus, btw) was 1 student short for the minimum requirement for them to come. No biggie. We re-scheduled for next week to give some parents a little more time since last week was spring break.

Fast forward to this morning, I've been on campus (my home campus) a grand total of 15 minutes and I have an ear ache complaint in my office. I'm trying to find my otoscope (it apparently walked off during spring break :bored: ) and get a heat pack for LD's ear when I get cornered in the conference room (this is where my heat/ice packs are stored) by a teacher.

She begins talking to me about the asthma clinic: "Oh. I put something in your box. Did you get it?"

Me: "the questionnaire for the asthma clinic?"

Teach: *looks at empty box* "Oh yes! I was texting with the lady there. We're friends. Probably because my son sees them. But she said we don't have enough students for our campus..." blahblahblahblah

So far this convo isn't an issue. I don't know WHY she felt the need to try to get involved with this considering its not her function, but whatevs. What DID push me over the edge was when I tried to walk around her to take the heat pack to the kiddo who is in my office needing my attention at that time, she literally stepped in front of me to block my exit and shoved her phone in my face to show me the text messages from this other lady. For reals?!

C'MON NOW.

I literally went from 0-100 in a split second with one gesture from her because all I could think was "you are literally keeping me from taking care of one of my kids". Granted, I'm well aware that this was a minor complaint, but she didn't know who or what I had in my office or why I had this heat/ice pack in my hand. It could have easily been something more emergent like a bad head wound or an attempt to stave off a seizure in my kiddo who is currently battling the effects of medication changes. Y'all. I haven't gotten this upset this fast in a long time.

Maybe a week and a day wasn't a long enough break :sniff::bag:

I just had a 6th grader tell me that she always thought the nurse sits around all day waiting for students to come in.

Today my T1D student threw up all over my floor and later told me that he forgot his machine. Mother had to come get him and I was told that it was high in the morning and he was complaining all morning about it, but nope mother thought he was faking and was to be sent to school. C'MON!

Apparently mother told me his BG was high last night and he would refused to do the insulin by syringe because his OmniPod malfunctioned, but he didn't want to, but would keep complaining all night. That's why his BG was high and in the morning too, and the mother tried to help him but he would not let her. And I do believe her because he tends to do that too with me, whine and complain that he feels bad but when I try to help him, he refuses or complains. He just doesn't understand that its the consequences for not trying to take care of himself and he refuses to listen to his mother and I. (Any advice to help this kid would be appreciated.)

With vomiting and high numbers I would be concerned with DKA. He NEEDS insulin or he will get very sick. The mom may not know this. If the pump is malfunctioning I would say tough cookies bud. You take these insulin shots or you'll end up in the hospital with a lot more pokes (if I was mom, not you). But they need to know the seriousness of vomiting while being a T1D.

LD: I'm having some stomach pain

Me: ok. what kind of stomach pain? sharp, dull, achy etc. etc.? *takes temp: WNL*

LD: its a little achy.

Me: did you eat lunch today?

LD: yeah. and I think its because of this new soda my mom put in my lunch

Me: oh, yeah sometimes carbonated drinks can cause some gas pain. make sure you politely release your burps and toots so that they don't build up in your belly because that can cause your stomach to hurt.

LD: ok...*goes to leave office but stops and turns around*....I'm going to call home anyways. There was a kid in my class that went home sick on Monday because they were throwing up and I think he gave me what he had."

Me: I really think you're going to be ok bud. You're not showing any s/s of a stomach illness that would necessarily warrant a phone call home.

LD: Well my mom wants me to call if my stomach is hurting

Me: then why come see me if that is an agreement you have with your mom?

LD: *shrugs* SHE told me to *points to admin assistant's desk*

Me: well alright. I'm not going to call for you because I don't think you need to go home. You can call from my phone, but make sure mom knows that I feel you are ok to stay in class.

LD: ok *calls dad*...."hi dad, I'm not feeling good. My stomach hurts and I've had some bathroom problems...." *talks more to dad*

Me: *to self* whaaaaa???

LD: *on phone with dad* "yes, the nurse said so...."

Me: WHAAAAAA?! :mad::no::cautious:

LD: *hangs up* my dad is coming to pick me up

Me: go get your things :cautious:

C'MON NOW. I can't stand lying. And then, after they came back with their belongings and are sitting in the office, naturally every teacher needs to know whats wrong...admin assistant says "oh. he's got the cooties!". No. No he doesn't. He's got the "I just lied to my dad so he would come pick me up"-itis...

Two middle school boys come in to my office SHOCKED that their stomachs hurt after eating a bag of GHOST PEPPER CHIPS!! C'mon what did you think was going to happen!! Came back three times and one of them finally puked (bet that didn't feel good). Sent them back to class!!

I have taken the phone from little one's that lie to their parents in front of me and call them out on it. Sadly most of the time it doesn't matter because usually the parents of the kids who are willing to lie while standing right in front of me are also the parents who believe EVERYTHING their child says.

I got two.

1. Little girl with rash on her hands, arms and around mouth that is continuing to spread. Call all of the numbers listed, no answer. Email, no answer. wait about 45 mins, contact teacher who texts mom, immediately responds says she will call the nurse back. 15 more mins go by, teacher shows me texts. I call again, straight to voicemail. Teacher calls off her cell phone, parent answers. C'MON NOW!!!

2. Little one comes in saying their bottom hurts because it's "poopy". Gave him a wet wipe to clean himself. Call dad who says "yeah we are still working on wiping at home. Maybe you can talk to him about it at school?"

Nope nope nope. C'mon now, your little guy is SIX.

Is it Friday yet?

Oh she knows and we have told him this, but he's at that age where he's rebellious and doesn't want to do what we ask him. It's not the mother who has the problem, is the child who doesn't seem to understand the seriousness of his disease. He just that whole "I don't care." and acts like any type of discipline isn't going to do anything.

Oh... When I have this happen, I call back and tell them the whole thing he just told me and that I don't think he has to go home, unless he wants to take him home. A lot of the time, they are like, oh well then he can stay.
