Specializes in Med/Surg, Academics.

I asked that very question of a nursing student one day: how should a pt be positioned for an enema and why? I had to prompt her with "Think about the anatomy," and she got it right!

Specializes in Oncology, Clinical research.

Thanks for posting - I love reading things like this.

I have a vintage edition of State Board review I found this folded up in it. I'll have to post some pictures from that. Some very interesting questions about how to make a turpentine enema...[/quote']

LOL! The turpentine enema caught my eye as well :o

Specializes in Critical Care, Postpartum.

I liked seeing "Sense of humor" on there. Sometimes my own patients and I enjoy cracking some jokes. Laughter is good for the soul. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for sharing this! I love seeing things from the history of nursing. I can't even figure out what some of those skills would entail... pharyngeal douche = gurgling w/ mouthwash?! And of course the turpentine lol

First thing that caught my eye was "Miss". Not even a chance of putting a Mrs. or god forbid a Mr.

Also notice neither the student nor reviewing nurse have initials after their names.

Acceptability to patient? What does this mean? Physical appearance? What if the patient said "no, not this nurse, please send me another"? *LOL*

Imagination, industry, even temper, dignity, acceptance of criticism, loyalty, memory? Is this for student nurses or Girl Scouts? *LOL*

Cupping? Thought that went out with the Middle Ages? Typhoid fever care is rated but given how the nation and world had just endured the great flu pandemic of 1918 surprised that disease and or known nursing interventions aren't mentioned.

Mustard plaster is still used in many parts of the world for various aliments, it was sort of the Vick's Vapo Rub of it's day. 11. Home Nursing. Nursing Minor Aches And Pains

Oh, so all the "even temper, sense of humor, dignity, etc." stuff was a nurse's evaluation of a student?

That makes more sense. I thought it was the nurse's assessment of the patient's character.

Specializes in Medical Surgical.

Its a miracle that any pts survived back then.

Specializes in PDN; Burn; Phone triage.

Cupping is still very common with CF patients, especially in a home setting, along with the usual vests and cough assist machines.

Did you notice how common a treatment alcohol rubs were? To bring down a temp, I'm thinking?

"Rubbing alcohol" was used as a muscle rub, most likely during HS care. Remember how every patient got a back rub before bed? That's probably how the student nurse gave over 70 alcohol rubs in that couple weeks.

Specializes in Eventually Midwifery.

Wow! Now I'm not a nurse yet, but certainly had NO idea that there were so many various douches LOL
