I believe the 1920s were a time of increasing awareness of sanitation, germs, importance of cleanliness. Some of these practices were over-reactions to that new information. Marketing new, unnecessary products aimed at making money by telling the public that they must be practically sterile. Deodorants, infant circumcision by Gentiles, oral care products, shaving armpits and legs, all became common. Indoor plumbing became available to the masses.
I remember my aunt who was a registered nurse beginning in 1929 telling me about the Lysol douche. And yes, "mustard plasters" and even "kerosene plasters" were used a lot back then. Although I believe the kerosene plasters were used mainly in rural homes not hospitals, thank goodness.

Lysol was actually the main form of birth control at that time. I use the term "birth control" loosely.
