Congrats to all those that are accepted and will be the class of 2015. I thought it would be nice to have our own thread where we can support each other along our journey. Mine is an ADN program, but I know some will be BSN as well.

With all that aside has anyone had their nursing orientation yet? How was it? What are some of the costs you have to dish out? Did it finally sink in that you will be starting nursing school soon?

Mine isn't until May 29th 9a-3p. I do know that our tops will be white and our bottoms will be green. I also know we are required to have an iPad which is included in our financial aid. I also know I have to pay $66.00 just for the drug test. The program pays for our in state CORI/SORI but I had to pay for my out of state one which was $31.00. I just payed for that today. We will be required to buy the books, stethoscope, name pin, uniforms, warm up jacket, lab coat, and more. So exciting. We will also schedule our classes on orientation day.

Lets get to know each other so we can support each other :)

Hi all! I'm a 2015 ADN student too. :-) My official orientation is in Aug, about 2 weeks before the semester starts. We did have an intake meeting this week - talk about a ton of "to do" items before Aug but this future RN isn't complaining - feeling blessed to have a seat. We wear red tops & black pants (awesome!), 15 books to buy along with ATI CARP, clinical kit, and on & on the list goes. I know there is a thread about shoes already but what are your thoughts about shoes while first starting out? Are you jumping feet first :-) into premium $$ shoes? or starting off with just the basic "meet requirement" type?

Wishing everyone much success!!

I bit the bullet and spent $125 on some very comfy shoes. I have super high arches and it's nearly impossible to get good support in my shoes without inserts. I bought Saucony brand shoes and they are like walking on clouds. Love them! We have to wear all white shoes, too. I am also going to try some Danskos at the nursing uniform shop, but not sure if I like the "clog" look or not. I see the majority of nurses at the hospital wear them, so they must be comfortable :)

I just bought my books today online through Amazon. I got a great deal, since some of them were used. They told us at orientation to budget $1,500 for the first semester's books. I was able to get all 19 books for $756! YAY! :D

Start my BSN program in Aug... have orientation 5/31 and the first week of Aug they have a "boot camp" for new students. This isn't required but recommended --- gives me a good reason to go part time at work a little earlier and have a wee bit of time off prior to starting classes. :)

Hello class of 2015 :-) I was also accepted into a nursing program which is an accelerated bsn program. We had registration on Thursday and we received our student ids. Tuesday morning we will have a welcome reception that we can bring our families too and after our families leave we will officially have our first day of class. So far we have had to purchase books for this semester, scrubs, solid white shoes, stethoscope, bp cuff, a watch, drug screen/background check ($116), and our school nursing kit which is a duffle bag full of nursing supplies ($125). I am so excited to begin this journey. Good luck to everyone!!!

So excited for everyone :) Lets keep this thread going.

Is anyone going to be working during nursing school? If so what are your hours/shift?

I will be working part time as a PCT at the hospital we have clinical's at. It's on the Infants and Children's unit 7p-7:30a 2 nights a week.

I have to ask the other PCTs if they could let me have wed and thurs off since I have clinical's those days following (thursday and fridays) 7a-1p.

Here a two year program starting in August too. Orientation is at the beginning of August. Paperwork meeting half of June, but I think I will ask for a head start due to traveling this summer and I want to be sure that all is in order on time.

Shoes: I know from working as a hostess and server that standing and walking for long times ask for comfort shoes. Of course we needed dressy shoes, so I paid a good amount for shoes that looked nice and supported well enough to get me through sometimes a shift of fourteen hours. Phew, hope I still can do such long shifts, I am a bit older now after all.

I plan to get fit over the summer. Loose a few pounds, do gentle weight training for my arms and walk, cycle and swim whenever I can and get my muscles that support back and shoulder in shape. Eat well, sleep well, be happy and relax. .that is the plan and if only 25% will be achieved I will be in a better place than where Ai am right now after completing all required coursework ;)

I started cleaning and organizing my house again and train the children in being more independent where it comes to waking up, breakfast, lunch totes and homework. Need to figure out if and what form of support I need, get a backup list for babysitters if youngest falls ill during school. Luckily the oldest is available for two weeks into the program, which gives me a bit longer to get sitters lined up. This way I can wait for students returning after the summer.

Updated my computer and tablet, and I am figuring out what apps may be handy in school. Free apps, that is ;) Although I am a paper and pen person, I will try to make notes on the tablet and upload it to a cloud so that I can access my notes anytime, anywhere, even on my phone. Also plan to record lectures that I can listen to when driving. I did this for pharm and it worked out wonderful. With driving to and from school and clinically and driving the kids on other days I can repeat many lectures in all these hours.

Thanks for this thread. I gives me the chance to put my thoughts in order, which helps my planning and stick to the plan ;)

Two years is actually four times four and a half month. That does not sound like a long time.

Hi everyone!!! I will be a graduate of a BSN program in May 2015. What a journey this has been!!

I'm in a BSN program and start in August. :) I'm excited! I already completed the background check and CPR certification. I know so many on AN are already in the hospital setting before starting nursing school, but I am a total newbie so every little thing is a huge deal to me. My CPR class was for healthcare providers, and I was standing with LVNs who were discussing their latest CPR attempts. I felt like I was in junior high looking in awe and wonder at seniors! Anyway, I passed the written test with a 100, so that made me feel good. I should hopefully get my textbooks in the next few weeks. I can't wait to look through them!

I will be starting my 18 month LPN program in September, I am super excited to get started. I am in A&P 1 this summer as well as a math class and a few others. Good times! I screwed myself as a college freshman straight out of high school and now 20 years later it is haunting me. With that GPA factored into my current 4.0 I have zero chance of getting into a ADN or BSN school in this area, so I will become the best LPN I can and hope to prove my worth and then bridge.

It is a longer trip to the BSN, but when you want something, you do what needs to be done to get there.

I start an ASN in August, our meeting is June 5. I'm very excited we have to wear all white scrubs with a school patch on them but that is about all I know.

Congratulations on getting into Nursing school!! I am so jealous of those who have been accepted into their programs. My school does not issue their notifications until June for the Fall entry, so I'm trying to plan for school while nervously waiting to hear if I'll even be attending. My chances are good with the highest score possible (excepting prior year alternate points), but it's still an agonizing wait. Best of luck to you all.
