I agree with Flare. I may call about the injury, and I let the parents know that I do not know the full situation and that an administrator will be calling for follow up. However, I try and time my calls so that I can transfer to an administrator, or even call from their office.
However, I do try and let admins make that call in general.
I call to report the injury but I am very careful to let the parent know I am just the messenger. I let the parent know my assessment findings and then let them know that the administrators are dealing with the detective work and that one of them will be giving the parents a call shortly.
I won't handle any discipline either. Just today I had 3 girls involved in a fight and I refused to let them tell me anything about the fight. Only their injuries.
Me: Ok, what happened to you?
Kid: This girl ran up to me an...
Me: Nope, let me rephrase. Where are you hurt?
Kid: She slapped my cheek.
Me: Take this ice pack. Next!
That's an admin call at our school. We assess, treat, then notify admin.
We used to call just to notify, but then the parents had too many questions that we couldn't answer and wanted transferred to admin immediately. Problem was, admin didn't have all of their information yet, so now they just make the call. Breaks my heart.

Question for all you School Nurses out there. If a child is bitten by another child in school, Are you responsible for calling and informing the parents of the child who was bitten or does your administration or the classroom teacher make that call?
