Can't stand Community Health

I just wondered in anyone else shares these feelings. This class is mostly BS and the material is completely obvious. You could pass the tests without even cracking open a book. What makes this class almost painful are the hoards of pointless, long papers that we have to write, and the care plans, which are boring me to death. The clinicals were also extremely boring and drawn out, and mostly pointless. I have one left and I am agonizing over this care plan, I would rather chew nails then finish it.

Sorry for the negative energy, I am just sick of this pointless class

everyone has one class they hate. my ph class was terrific, but my first surgical rotation was a bust-- a va ortho floor where over the course of one entire semester i cared for three patients with ancient osteomyelitis infections. that was it for surgery, lol.

luck of the draw, and better luck next time.

I really enjoyed my Med-Surg classes and am looking forward to Critical Care next semester, which will be my last class to take. I think that I am getting a little bit of senioritis too and becoming antsy to be finished.

not to be nitpicky, but we need to be sure we use proper terminology. seniors are not inflamed ("itis") but may be exhibiting characteristics of the senior condition (osis). think of the difference between diverticulosis (the condition of having diverticuli) and diverticulitis (having inflamed diverticuli). see?

i know that the news media misuse this all the time and it's gotten into the popular lexicon, but please... seniorosis.

so now that you have your diagnosis correct, you can tailor your interventions and reassessments/evaluations.:nurse:

seniorosis, unlike diverticulosis, is a temporarily chronic but self-limiting condition that resolves with the passage of time. however, like diverticulosis, if you don't do the right things to coexist with it, you can develop complications and end up in a world of hurt.

preventing complications is huge with many chronic conditions. so eat right, do what you have to do to take care of business/yourself, and watch for and recognize pathological signs (falling grades, malaise, and skipping your responsibilities are the equivalent of malaise, fever, and pain) and have a plan for what to do if they develop in you or your friends.

Specializes in LTC.

I believe in senioritis- sorry greentea.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

I not only enjoyed that class, 15 years later it is still one I recall and use concepts in practice. We had to evaluate a community need, decide how a nurse could be the "answer" to the need, then create a business plan and care plans that would support the intervention. Nursing process with community as the patient. My group actually created a real nursing station within a women's shelter and provided care plans regarding self care. We created a book of referrals or contact numbers for transportation, WIC office, etc. We got donations of computer, desk, BP cuff and all the basic "stuff". The local university nursing school used this site as a lab with real patients for several years (till the shelter needed the space for residents). It was fun to see it all come to fruition.

Specializes in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Flight.

i share them with you wholeheartedly. i dont like using the word hate because its a strong word but i hate community. i dont quite understand why they give us so many assignments in that class. its like they are trying to prove a point or something..idk. either way i dont like it and it has literally kicked my butt all semester.

as for your comment about the textbook. i never opened mine, wait i opened it once. so im selling it. bought it for 105$, mind you this book is in mint condition. was only able to sell it back for $5. b/c they changed the edition & its a completely diff. book at my school now. it just keeps getting better eh?:devil::down:

im sure if all community students had an opportunity to do something as positive as this that actually filled a need in the community and helped patients out we would be less likely to complain and want to drink hemlock and cry ourselves to sleep lol.

Yeah, I didn't like community health either. It was not fun. Everyone I spoke with said it would be fun. The lecture was boring and provided by a mindless drone. The clnicals were disorganized and lacked any educational objective. They were a show up once, check the box, and leave event that made for only being socially awkward in that you had to invade someone's workplace and take over their day only to walk out at the end of the day (or whenever I got sick of being there).

and feeling like you were in the way/completely out of place? yeah.. weird right LOL

Look at it this way, when you are finished with this class, you are that much closer to your goal.

I hope this BS class does not interfere with a very important practicum, a practicum that may get me a job in an area I want. Community health is definitely an area I don't want to go into if I can help it.

Good luck to you, there's light at the end of the tunnel.
