Can we start a new forum for "older" student nurses

Hey, some things are better aged, right?

What more can you ask for? An aged (life-experienced) person as a new, fresh out of school nurse? The hospitals will be getting the best of both worlds with those of us in this thread. :)

Mind you, "old age" is a state of mind. In some cases, we have to wonder where we put it.....(our minds, that is......) :chuckle

Still, I understand what the OP meant. I was 39 when I went back for my RN/BSN. I was "the old lady" of the group, barring the professors...... But....with age comes wisdom.

Wow a group I will fit in. I am 32 and feel so out of place around all the high school grads. I am also a mother of 3 so much more experiance per say I tend to agree with those saying we are Wiser!! Thanks for the thread guys!!

I'd rather be associated with "older and wiser" than "young and foolish".

.....been there, done that. LOL (...and the sad thing is, I was more mature than most people my age!)

I like the idea of a "Mature Students" forum. I'm 41, in my 2nd semester of an RN with plans to continue on to do an RN to BSN or even MSN if I'm feeling ambitious then. I've had several different types of jobs in the last two decades since I got my first BS degree, not even including being a "domestic engineer". I'm not the oldest person in my class, there is another woman who is 47. It's so much more common these days to have people transitioning into new careers. We live so much longer, with better health. I can't imagine doing the same job all my life. It does us good to have new challenges and interests, it keeps our brains "young", IMO.

I think my life experience helps me in school. Many times, I know about stuff that comes up in class just because I like to read, I might have experienced it myself or in my family, etc. I don't go out an party on the week-ends like some of my younger classmates either, I got that out of my system long ago. So I can stay more focused on my goals.

I think that because of some of the issues we may have as older students, it would be great to have somewhere to go and talk about them. Like being so tired at the end of a clinical day, with swollen feet, having less stamina, forgetfullness, are all things I deal with routinely. I know that younger students probably have these problems as well, of course. But I know that at 41, I just don't have the energy I did at 20 or 30. I've got a lot more grey hairs though!:chuckle

Feeling old and depressed today. Start back to school tommorrow finishing my prereqs and waiting on the letter to see if i was accepted for the fall program. Most days i dont feel old but when i begin to think of my future I feel very old and afraid noone will want to hire me and that i dont have enough time to do all i want to do. Oh well, I definately would not trade my maturity to be twenty again especially when i think of all the stupid things i did in my twentys lol. Hope everyone has a great semester by the way have you all started yet?

I'm not in the older group yet either, but here's my 2 cents...I never bother to look at the age of the poster, so I'd never know how old ya are unless you talk about it! :rotfl:

Hang in there....I can really empathize....there are days when I think that there's not enough time left to do all that I want to and achieve all that I'd like to.....I don't worry so much about someone wanting to hire me -- I've seen enough postings on this site to know that's not so and the jobs will be out there....I think a lot of the fear at this age (for me anyway), is the realization that I actually won't live forever....I've already outlived quite a few of people I went to high school with.....and the realization that I'm a lot closer to it than I was in my 20's and 30's!!

This sounds great. I'm 47 and applying to a Masters Entry program, then on to NP. I'll be 50 or 51 when I finish. Yes, I feel very old, and surprised that here I am at this age re-thinking my whole career. Thanks for the posts!

No getting around it, I'm definately older. 90% of my Bio 102 class were born AFTER I graduated from high school, and a I am definately, in a chronological sense, the oldest person in the room in my Chem 105 class, prof included!

Last week I counted no less than six sleeping students in that bio class.

I'm so thrilled that class is graded on a curve. Snooze away, grasshopper.

Youth is SO wasted on the young.

I'm 50 and deal with the same issues as nurses of all ages hence I so enjoy "allnurses", however, realistically, I do have age related issues, not related to nursing i.e. menopause, grandchildren, achy bones, I say how about a

"Over 50's thread"? I'd sign up. I think 35 y/o is alittle young wihen talking about older nurses. Yes, they can have alot of experience defining them as an experienced nurse but having been 35 and now 50 y/o "old nurse" takes on a whole new meaning to us babies of the 1950's!:rotfl:
