Can we start a new forum for "older" student nurses

Nursing Students General Students

it seems there has been tons of interest concerning us "older" students. :chuckle you know, 35 and older who started the whole process late. everytime someone asks if "anyone else is out there? " the thread is flooded. it would be great to have our own forum like the "male nurse forum". if not a forum, how 'bout a sticky??? thanks for considering us older, wiser, (hah) and second career-ers!

hi all, just received "the letter". after receiving rejections for 3 years!! i finally received the one with.............. (drum roll please)...........:redpinkhe an acceptance!!! ta da! :yeah: :w00t:

okay, so there is a small catch... i've been accepted as an alternate. but, don't take that badly because all alternates start too, but then at least i have the option of waiting. it all depends on if i can get a babysitter for my add boy (10). (for the mornings) so now i'm on the hunt. it might be easier to start in the fall, so i will have more time to line up child care etc. we'll see.

but darned if i am not darned excited!!!! thrilled, titillated etc!!! heather

What about the students that are a year from 30, that don't have much in common with 18 year olds, though?

Marie, you can join. I'm joining, and I'm not 35 yet. lol

I'm just at the "young enough to want to, old enough to be determined to" age. :chuckle

Maybe that's what it should be called lol.

Specializes in ER, ICU, Cardiac, Med-Surg.

I like the idea of having an "older students' forum", but I am not sure there really needs to be a minimum age requisite. Couldn't it just be for people who self-identify as mature based on life experience and responsibility?

absolutely! as i mentioned earlier in this forum, all are welcome!! there are many of us who just don't fit the after high school mold. anyone who wants to find a place where they are warmly welcomed, it is here! heather

I would welcome a special place for "life experienced" entants into the field of nursing.

I hope not because I am two years older than you!

Hmmm, would 58 be too old for an "older" student nurses forum??????

I just want to add that anytime I start getting down on myself and thinking that I HAVE to start by next fall or it's all over, I'll be getting too old, all I have to do is come page through some of these threads....they are such great inspiration!

When I was working on my bachelor's in my 40's, I heard from my mom too often that her (alcoholic and soon-to-be ex-) husband used to say, "Why is she bothering? She's going to be an old bag (or hag) by the time she graduates and who will want her then?" He also made derogatory comments to her about her age....but I digress...

When I did get my bachelor's in '99, I had very little trouble finding a job....so I don't know why sometimes I still hear his little voice in my head...I'm glad I've got you guys to counterbalance that hooey!

I have returned to school several times. I started with diploma program. 10 yrs, one husband and 2 kids later.. I got my Bachelor's degree. Then when my 2 kids were in college, I returned again for MSN.

I'm glad that you poo poo'd your mom's soon to be x! Congratulations on finishing your BSN!

Well, let me correct that misconception -- I finished my bachelor's in Management Information Systems in '99. I'm BACK in school hoping to get a degree in something that will make a difference and leaving me MUCH more fulfilled than sitting in a cube with my PC for 8 hours a day does!! :crying2:

After years of avoiding anything that resembled a science course, I have all the prereqs and anything else I could complete outside of an RN program done. And I surprised the heck out of myself that I did pretty well too!

I'm very anxious to get in to a program and get started in a new career that will hopefully fulfill the rest of MY requirements to take me in to retirement age!! (I just have to keep those little voices out of my aged head!):rotfl:
