I deserve Christmas off." Sigh....every years it's the same. Single, no kids with many years at this hospital, against newbies with kids.
One of these days it's gonna get ugly. I have a family too, I like Christmas too. Maybe.
To any student nurses with kids. Guess what. It's a 24-hour operation. Open on Christmas day whether you have kids, plans, or have to cook or not. You are not entitled.
Sorry. Just ranting.
Dayray: One of the reasons I, as a single w/o kids put my foot down is because the MWK never reciprocated.
So, I really don't care if I have no plans on that day. If I want to relax with my other friends who happen to be off, that's my business, and I owe no justification to anyone.
You chose the profession, you chose to have kids. Your choices, your consequences.
fab4fan, I can see dividing the holidays w/ fairness, but at the same time, I think what you are saying is kind of cold. It's been my experience that people really don't understand "the kid thing" until they have their own. Then, all of a sudden, they get it. '
I think what I see as cold as you saying "you chose the profession, you chose to have kids. your choices, your consequences." Have a little understanding would ya?
Virgil, I totally agree with fab4fan.
Some of us will never "have our own." But, that is beside the point. What's fair is fair.
What if I thought I deserved more money than you, because I decided I wanted to live in a bigger house? My choice to live in the bigger house, my responsibility to deal with it and sacrifice for it, not yours, right?
Some of us w/ kids do get it. I think there are selfish people with and without kids. I am sorry, I don't get the hormone thing. BTW, the co-worker who needs off for hunting season is female, in case referring to my post you were thinking male/female issue. It's a shame that the adults that we work w/ want to act more like the toddlers they are raising or not raising at home. If it's really important to someone else, I will try to switch w/ them. I f they have been very selfish w/ their schedule in the past, I will not. I have a co-worker who puts herself as 1st off every Sunday evening (our census often goes low on Sundays) as she must spend the entire day observing the Sabbath. This is ridiculous. She needs to get another job because we are open 24/7 and she knew this coming in. If she wants to switch for any reason, then the answer is always no. I don't have a lot of sympathy for nursing management in general, but in this regard I do because people are completely selfish about their holiday schedules.

Cold-hearted or not, I like your statement here Fab4!
And I do get "it", and people are selfish about their holiday schedules, people with and without kids. It's Christmas for heaven's sakes, we have to look after ourselves. And it's a no-brainer that parents want/need to be off with their kids.
I've never thought that I deserved a holiday or any other day off simply becasue I have children. As I said in a previous post, my hospital has their nurses number which holidays they want 1-5 and they try to give everyone their 1st choice...most of the time it works, but a few do have to take their second choice...no one had to take their 3rd choice this year. My family has no porblem celebrating on the 24th or the 26th or even the 20th or 30th. Much worse things could happen than not having a holiday off. Here, when everyone works together, we're all pretty happy with our schedules...sometimes we have to pick up an extra weekend, etc, but we also know that when we need the extra weekend off, we'll get it...
I'm with you fab! I haven't spent a Xmas with my family since I graduated from nursing school because I haven't lived in the same city, so I would require more than 12 hours off. It was my choice to live away from them and I have to suck it up. I don't expect the whole unit to work around my decisions anymore than a parent can. The upside when I was in the US was I always got Thanksgiving with my family because Canadians celebrate it in October.
Okay, I just HAVE to add my 2 cents...
I had an aunt that was a nurse for many years, and therefore had to work some holidays-never heard her complain. Her family just adjusted to her schedule. That is what I plan to do when I am a nurse. BTW-at least you get to go home at night. I was gone for 3 days over christmas in a previous job. That sucked! Kudos to all of you who work together all/some can have at least a few hour with their family. :kiss
The wording may have seemed cold (I personally don't think it is, simply calling a spade a spade), but it is still a fact. If you choose to have children, then you need to accept the consequences that having those children brings.
I've had more than my share of "compassion" for people with kids, which is why I've had to get very choosy about who I will accommodate.
