Official Statement Regarding Passing of Brian Short, Founder of allnurses.com, September 12, 2015
We are deeply saddened by the unexpected death of Brian Short, founder of allnurses.com. We respectfully request that you grant the company's employees, friends, families and associates privacy during this difficult time. allnurses will continue to support nursing professionals by providing an unparalleled peer-to-peer online community where they can share experiences and learn from and support one another.
Please use this thread to post your comments of condolence and gratitude for Brian who created this wonderful nursing community that has benefited so many.
There is a lot of unsubstantiated information coming out, as can be expected, please everyone refrain from posting speculative posts here. The admins and the staff are in shock and grief and working very hard to keep a thread open so all members have the opportunity to share their condolences and memories of what allnurses has afforded them.
To those who didn't know Brian, this is just a story. To those of us who knew and loved him and his family, it's a deep heartache and a nearly unfathomable mystery. "Sources" can be wrong or incomplete, but regardless of the the outcome of the investigation, we will mourn the terrible loss. No matter who was responsible, complex, beautiful people were involved and "gotcha" pronouncements and knee-jerk judgments do nothing but kick the already wounded.
Even when we know who, we may not understand why. That doesn't negate the love and concern. It just means some things will never make sense on this earth. God have mercy on them all and comfort those left behind.
I don't care what speculations are in the press and we are deleting posts here that talk about them it is the ones left behind that either knew the family, frequent this website and have seen Brian post or even just use the site for reference without joining that need a way of offering condolences without having to see negativity on here.
I thank all the members that have posted their thoughts and condolences and I hope to see a lot more without links to speculation..
Whatever the cause of this tragedy I hope we can help each other and support each other at this sad time.
I've always remembered this-- everyone is dealing with their own personal demons in our own personal levels. I always make sure to treat people with respect because you don't know what that person is going through--the human mind is a very delicate, complex entity. No one will ever know what could have triggered this tragedy.
With that said, prayers to Brian, his family, and everyone else impacted by this devastating tragedy. This is really shocking-beyond belief...can't comprehend. Blessings for this site and all.
One of the most remarkable things about allnurses is that it doesn't use software designed to act as a filter, it doesn't use upvote, downvote, "best" comments, reputation points, etc. Yes, there are written rules and moderators to curtail what we don't want here but the true power of our community comes from leadership that is so much more than "don't do that".
This place has a culture created by Brian Short, Joe V, a small group of stalwart administrators a flock of guides, and most important of all, frequent posters who get it. Without you all being the good people you are we're sunk.
We'll weather this as we have other devastating events by reaching deep and hanging on inside this awful rogue wave. Our feet will touch bottom, and the mean-spirited will leave. This isn't their home, it's ours.
I have been posting and mostly reading in recent years since my undergraduate nursing school days. I graduated from nursing school in 2004 and with my Masters in 2007. Now I am a Nurse Practitioner. This site has had a wealth of information for me and so many others. When I heard the news from one of my sons who sent me an article via e-mail, I went to tell a couple of the newer nurses who both gasped in disbelief. They both had definitely heard of this site and spoke of how they would visit it for information. Allnurses.com has grown to become a well respected site among nurses. So sad to hear this about Brian and his immediate family. My prayers for their extended family and the allnurses.com staff.
I learned of this tragedy yesterday and wanted to comment but haven't until now because I needed time to process that which I still cannot wrap my mind around and because somehow words seem so woefully inadequate to express what I want to say.
To the family and friends of the Short family. I am so very sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you. I pray that you are somehow able to find peace and comfort.
To the moderators at AN. Thank you. I can only imagine how much your grief is compounded by trying to keep things here running smoothly. Your doing so is a testament to your dedication not only to this community but to Brian's memory as well. I appreciate you.
To the members at AN. As a community we laugh together, learn from one another, and occasionally even disagree with each other. Today we cry together.
