Best/Worst Jobs Before Nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

What were the best and worst jobs you ever had before becoming a nurse?

My best was as a vocalist for a band. In fact, if you watch the movie "My Life" w/ Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman, I was the singer in the wedding band at the reception scene. Red sequined dress shaking a tambourine. That was fun!

Worst job was my first job ever, working at Dunkin' Donuts. I still have trouble eating those!

Best job: Working as an EMT for a local ambulance service while in college. Most of the EMT's were students. We worked out of the hospital( 25 beds) and worked in the ED. We had so much fun! Don't ever tell me nothing happens in a small town!

Worse job: Waitress at a pancake house. Smelled like syrup all the time.

Heeeey...don't feel bad...that's what it's there for! Temporary assist during a rough patch. It wasn't meant to be used for a life time. You used it the way it was meant. :)

I actually had alot of fun with this....

- First, the student's already had their state issued (at the time) truck-driver's license and had already been to a formal truck driving school (8-10 weeks).

- My job was to show them how to handle an 18-wheeler in the real-world environment.

- In Manhattan, unless you are making a delivery (never do with an 18-wheeler 53-foot trailer), you do not get off the interstate.

- On Long Island, the roads are well marked for semi's. So other that the heavy traffic, and tolls ($20 to cross George Wash bridge and another $13 (each way) to cross into Long Island, it's not too bad. This was back in 1988-1989.

- The best part of the job was running in "team mode" with students that I felt comfortable with. I would get paid for all the miles the truck ran, so would sleep while student drove and vice versa. The student's were paid a flat rate of $200 a week. Normally would run from NYC to LA 3 times a month.

- The idea behind the real-world experience, was to reduce the accident rate for new drivers. The experience allowed the students to get acclimated to their new environment, and to get familiar with managing their time, handling situations with the truck, and doing it all in a safe manner. Seemed to work.

-----

- I left in Jan 1990 to start college (computer's & mathematics).

-----

- Am tired of computers and am looking forward to starting nursing school. Start actual clinicals next year (June 2004), and can't wait.

Best Job: Babysitting for my neighbors.

Worst Job: Working at K-Mart=(

I have to ditto the housewife. These were the best and sometimes worse times of my life. I wouldn't trade the time I got to spend with my kids but it is the most degrading job there is. Everyone (but my own mother) says "Are you working now or still staying home with your kids" HELLOOOOOOOO!! I feel like opening their mouth and inserting my own foot!!

This is a great thread!

Worst: Working in the mill of a lead mine. At noon I asked for a pair of gloves, as I had to shovel sodium cyanide into huge vats of rock and water. They laughed at me. I had to buy a pair of steel toed boots that were 2 sizes too big because in those days wimmin didn't need boots to do a man's job....

Best: Sewing for a master sailmaker in Boston. The experience I got working there allowed me to construct a lodge out of canvas a few years later.

Best: As a teenager working at a pet shop for 4 years before the company went out of business.

Worst: Working for a wildlife park after it was flooded 2 years in a row and cleaning up and disposing of the dead, decaying, bloated animals ( larger animals had to be hacked up with an axe into smaller pieces). The worst part was the smell of death. Very nauseating. In addition everyone including myself on "carcuss cleanup" got some sort of disgusting , painful rash on our feet and legs from something in the water which we all had to tread through for several weeks.

Best~,,,, tending bar,,,, two years, in a town,, where I knew everyone,,,, the place rocked,,, I made excellent tips,,,,,

Worst~ the two weeks,, I tried to work in the pottery,,,, stamping and waxing,,,, somehting after something,,,, the$$$$$$ was excellent,,,, but ,,,,, well I worked nine days,,,,,,,,

Best jobs: Bartending and working in a greenhouse. The greenhouse pay was horrible but the job was fun.

Worst job: Working for Wendy's. That was my first job. It was awful!

So So job: Driving that little truck for NAPA. I had my Uncle take the hat off the top before I would drive the thing.

Worst job: my first, a hostess at a Greek diner. All the greasy nasty guys in the kitchen proposed marriage to me

Best: a nanny for 3 kids ages 4-9... they were usually well behaved, I got paid pretty well, and it was easy!

BEST: Current job...Which is, working as a Caregiver at Assisted living LTC facility. Mostly nice co workers, really nice residents and nice nurses/managers.

WORST: Doing light Janitor work at a Strip club. :imbar Puke all over the bathroom, feces on the walls... Hey, I did find some good cash left behind the night before though. Once found a $100 bill!!
