Best Places to Buy/Rent Student Books

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am not too sure if there is a post about this already but I am about to enter my first semester in Nursing School, and I know school is so expensive. I thought that we could start a post about books to buy/rent or alternate options. One of my favorite places to get my books in from Amazon. I was wondering if there are other great sites that is out there for us students.

I do not really want to go into detail, but it involves someone using my card info to make fraudulent "purchases". The first time it happened, a month ago, two bank reps in the claims dept. were very helpful and reversed all of the charges, (but failed to issue me a new card). The same thing happened again, about three weeks later, and this time, the individual in the claims dept. is making excuses for amazon and tried to put the onus on me. They made my account inaccessible online, so I have to go through them again, to find out what the resolution is and I have absolutely no access to the money that was not fraudulently taken. To say I am upset is putting it lightly.

I still don't understand how is this Amazon's fault. You seem to have been a victim of credit card theft... And there is more chances of this happening by using random textbook websites than by using Amazon which is such a gigantic company, that by the way has a very complex security since they handle so much financial, personal, business and other kinds of data.

It is more likely amazon's fault, than not. All of the fraudulent charges dealt with amazon and occurred after I did business with amazon, so the connection that an amazon employee was implicated, is quite logical. Had it all been associated with another company with similar circumstances, I would have the same misgivings. At any rate, I won't be taking any further chances with amazon in the future. I am quite certain they won't miss my little business.

I used chegg.com. I compared the prices to Amazon and chegg was much cheaper.

I have discovered that teachers often tell you to buy the newer edition, but it's hardly EVER necessary. Especially for classes such as psych, med/surg, or pedi/ob. Often times you can buy books an edition older and only pay a few dollars if you shop on amazon. I do it every single semester and never spend more than $20 on books. I have really good grades and will graduate in december.

The only book that i would recommend you buying brand new are medication books. Other than that, save your hundreds. All text books have an index:) Hope this helps!

I initially rented my pharm book from Barnes and Nobles then bought it out right. Last quarter I went to half price books and bought a BRAND NEW PREVIOUS EDITION med surg book for 6.99 and my OB book for 20.00. IN BOTH BOOKS, EVERYTHING WAS THE EXACT SAME except maybe a page or two; other than that it was all the same for crazy less money! So I say buy the USED PREVIOUS EDITION FROM AN ALTERNATE SOURCE AND SAVE TONS OF CASH!

amazon and half priced books

I use half.com and find great prices. Sometimes you need to wait. Also textbookhead had a best price for one of my new books. On both sites you have to be careful about cds and access codes included.

I've been renting from Amazon for several semesters. They've been consistently cheaper than other places

I use Amazon and got a sweet deal from a girl on Facebook - scout the nursing study group pages, new grads are trying to sell their books. I got a clinical calculations and pharmacology for $15 each, both in awesome condition

Sent from my iPhone using allnurses

Half.com is super

For renting I looooove bookrenter.com. Free shipping both ways, you can write/highlight, and you can always extend or buyout the book if need be. I have always found them the cheapest for the books I've needed.

Sometimes they might not have the book you need (rarely) so then I use Amazon.

I got calculating dosages brand new, cd included for $5 from half.com
