Per the request of janina08 I've started the April NCLEX takers support group. When do you take it? What are you using to study? Would anyone like to review any of the systems/meds that he/she feels weakest on? Let's keep each other in our prayers and good thoughts as we go through one of the biggest experiences of our lives. :)
i realized rose's exam is tomorrow. so, i'm just going to post some information for revision purposes:1) standard precautions:

if i know this by heart, will this be good enough to help me pass the infection control questions? to be honest, i'm really nervous about this topic. i'm only using saunder's 3rd ed...
sorry for asking too much, i just want to do everything i can and not regret later...
thank you again!:)

amen to that..as a may nclex taker i wish i was part of your group, b/c although we don't know each other we are helping one another out..and to me that's just sooo amazing:cry:..you guys are going to make great nurses..and moments you are such a huge help:bowingpur..thanks..
Maybe I have an answer to my own question.....just would love to get input from anyone that knows!
I work in a LTC facility, and most patients receive Calcium with Vitamin D, but a few recieve Calcium Gluconate. I wonder if its just a doctors preference.
I thought I read at some point that Calcium w/ Vit. D interferes with certain meds, making Calcium Gluconate a better choice, but I can't find my source!
Thanks!
Teresa

Hmm. Well, I can think of one thing: vit D is given with Ca because it helps absorb the Ca better in the gut, especially in the elderly. Now, interactions with meds, I think it depends on the meds they are given. Calcium Gluconate is usually used as an antidote to other meds and electrolyte imbalances, no? I know the steroids and Ca do not mix, but I can't really think as to why Calcium gluconate would be better. *shrug* Though, I see what you're saying because Calcium gluconate could be potentionally better because of the reasons you listed, but the only thing I can think of as to why vit D and Ca are given over vit D and Calcium gluconate would be that vit D and Ca work better together in order for the vit D to be absorbed correctly in the guts.
Sorry if that didn't make sense. :chuckle
I also agree with Mave, calcium gluconate is also given to give additional effect to prevent bone thinning specially in the case of elderly who are prone of hip fractures, osteoporosis, osteomalacia etc. Calcium with Vitamin D supplements were malabsorb by the body and then excreted in some health cases of elderly patients.
Here is the link that can be related to your question:
