Hi...I am a new grad LPN and passed my boards July 30th. I have no previous experience in the healthcare field except some volunteer work - I ran a family business for the past 20 years. Anyway since I passed my boards I have applied for at least 120 jobs online and in person and have not heard from anyone. How are you supossed to get experience if no one will hire you. I am becoming frantic and will move anywhere to get that elusive 1 year of experience (Im in Mass). What is a person to do? Is there anywhere that is willing to give a new grad a chance? Trying to keep the faith but its hard. Thanks!

Have you tried calling recruiters and or hiring managers?
As a DON in long term care I get dozens of applications each week. I have had a few new grads show up and politely introduce themselves. They didn't try to monopolize my time, just quickly "Hello, I'm so-n-so and I am very interested in working for your facility. It has a fantastic reputation in the community. Here is my resume and I hope you will think of me when you get an opening".
I have now hired two different people from this approach. Of course I left some strangers resume sitting on my desk untouched (maybe that was yours - just kidding as I don't live anywhere near you but do you see my point).

Hi, I live in Mississippi. All of my cousins are nurses as well as some of my aunts and a few friends, all but one of my friends had a job offer before they got their exam scores back. And the one friend who didn't ( she's a LPN), was hired within two weeks of passing the test. They are scattered throughout Hattiesburg, Jackson, and Meridian. I'm almost certain that you dont want to move here but just letting you know there's hope :loveya:
Oh, and I must add.....none had health care experience

California is absolutely flooded with too many LVNs/LPNs. Some who have graduated in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 still have not landed their first jobs in nursing. I definitely would not recommend California as a destination if you cannot find work.
Texas offers slightly more hope of finding an LVN/LPN position as long as you stay away from the major cities. Dallas, Houston, and Austin have nursing job markets that are saturated with too many LVNs. The small towns and mid-sized cities tend to have more opportunities.

Im in California I had no trouble finding work. Although I did work as a CNA at both jobs before I was an LVN, but there are lots of brand new nurses they have hired.

If you're willing to move to Virginia, there's a place in Newport News called the Hampton Roads Specialty Hospital that hire mostly LPNs. I would call and inquire. A lot of nursing homes also are willing to hire new grads if you don't mind using that as a stepping stone and gaining experience from those types of facilities.
I dont mind Nursing Homes at all - in fact thats where I have been applying but most of the ads for them also say 1 year of experience. Thanks for all your replies - you have given me a lot to think about!!!

Also consider peds home health. PSA (Pediatric Services of America) and Maxim Healthcare specialize in private duty peds with chronically ill kids. Most have g tubes and some have trach's and some are on vents. When I was an LPN and while I was in RN school I worked for companies like this. I was never interested in working at a nursing home, plus this type of position allowed me to study at work (I worked nights). Also check with your school, they may have some suggestions for you. Good luck!

Try the Dakotas, I don't recall which one. I hear there is an oil boom going on there and they need people from all professions. Be warned, an oil boom can end almost overnight.
