what's the general concensus on nose rings as a nurse?
just wondering....random topic
Personally, I don't like metal hanging off someone's face. My personal preference.
However, if I could get a belly button ring, hooked together with two earrings and maybe a nose piercing too - then I would have all the sagging stuff held together and I wouldn't need plastic surgery - lol.
blessed, I don't know what the exact rules will be at your school, but we actully had someone who had to leave our program due in part to the fact that she had tats on her hand that couldn't be covered up. For us, it's 1 pair small stud earrings, wedding band with no protruding stone, no visible tat's or piercings. I also just take all mine out or have them in places no one can see, it's easier than trying to fight to have it.
Since you seem to view the "image of nursing" as a firm thing, which is incapable of evolution, modification or adaption, I can safely assume that you wear all white (white skirt/dress, white hose and white blouse?--no pants of course!), hair in a short bob or pulled into a bun, with a little white cap...possibly an apron?Because a nurse today-all white scrubs, hair in a pony tail (no cap) and crocs would have been looked at as unprofessional way back when. Does that mean that this nurse in 2007 is any less qualified, compassionate, skilled or competant than her 1907 counterpart?
I don't understand the objection to a nosering. As analegna mentioned, it carries no infection risks (unless maybe the nurse was constantly playing with it, but I'd think that'd be more of a risk for her, and gross). It's not genuinely offensive (unless a nurse were to wear, say, a skull or devil or sexually themed ring....but that can be said about scrub tops, necklaces, rings, etc). So some people might not like it. Again, the same can be said about scrubs, "acceptable" jewlery, or any other aspect of a person's physical appearence.
KellNY...I don't think you can "Safely assume" anything about my view, and the rules of the place I work in. I do not wear a "white dress and a bun in my hair!" although when I trained as a midwife, here in Scotland, that was the case! (and you are dissing that ..why?) now, I work in the NICU, and yes , I wear scrubs and crocs, but thats still not true for other parts of the hospital. and I'm only 38..I actually don't remember 1907!..but I think we, as a proffession have come a long way since then, with regards to autonomy etc! where I work, one set of ear-rings, and one wedding band on view is all that is permitted. Anything else--you either keep off or leave hidden. AND I do not back down, that I agree with this from a proffesional point of view!
not in the Dark ages, just aware of how nurses appear at work!!!!!Facial piercings are not right for a nurse!!!!...(IMO & the opinion of my hospital!) Hey..all opinions count eh!
I have too much time on my hands these days. I try to think in the mindset of an alien looking at our dot (planet) from like 50 gazillion light years away. In the grand scheme of things there really isnt a difference between a nose piercing and ear piercing. Just as there is no real difference between going topless for a man in contrast to a woman. However there is a general concept of "professionalism" in our society and nose rings arent considered professional (as well as things like blue jeans, hats, etc).
Just the way it is in our society, it isnt fair and does involve prejudice.
I was being tongue in cheek with the "safely assume" thing. I wasn't dissing the white dress/bun thing, just saying that it was far from the norm nowadays, and mentioning how rules and ideas evolve over time and social changes.KellNY...I don't think you can "Safely assume" anything about my view, and the rules of the place I work in. I also didn't realize that you're in Scotland, so that changes the way I feel about your posts a bit (helps me to better understand where you're coming from).
I 100% agree that a nosering is not a professional item. But I do not agree that the presence of a nose ring is enough to make someone look unprofessional or even to detract from the image of one's being a professional.
Why are earrings OK..But not a nose ring??? They are both unnatural holes in your head. I have my nose pierced and I think it looks very nice. If I can't wear my nose ring, then I surely don't want to see anyone with any god awful metal in their ears. ICK ICK ICK.
Seriously, times change. Get OVER IT.
Okay, for those of you with nose rings, I'm going to ask the question I've always wondered about and never had the nerve to ask - isn't it awfully messy or uncomfortable if you have a head cold or allergies? Just one of those thoughts that goes through my head when I'm looking at someone with a nose ring.
