Anyone Else have to Sub in classrooms??

In our district it is illegal to be in the classroom in charge of students if you are not certified, this includes subs. I can't even watch a classroom for a teacher while they use the restroom. They are taking advantage, you need to put a (kind, but firm) stop to it.

No I do not have a teaching degree, I have never even been a substitute for a school district. All we have here is principals and a superintendent. I don't have HR I was hired by the superintendent. I have requested a job description to see if it is in there but I can't imagine it would be. I am doing my job too lol, they are sending the kids to me in the classrooms as well as the teachers and everyone else who needs something from me. Thank you for commenting. I need prayers not to be irritated, I don't want the kids to feel my stress, but I know they are because I am stressed! Thank you for the support, I love this board!

Aren't sick kids supposed to be kept away from healthy kids?

Wow. I would be quitting without notice in a situation like that. The position I am in now told me I would have to provide day care services for our nurses in the case of inclement weather with school closings. I said nope, won't happen. I am NOT a kid person and never will be. I can't imagine being required to provide child care, sub teach or etc. I am so glad it sorted itself out for you!

I am a school nurse for a smaller district, I am the only nurse between two campuses and we have approx. 800 students total. Twice now I have came to work to find out that I will be in a classroom all day. Is this the norm? Ya'll...I am not teacher material. I started out as a pre-k teacher and learned real quick I do not like being in the classrooms, hence I changed my major to registered nurse. I love my hours and the Holidays with my own kids, but this is wearing on me. I do two or three different jobs and only get paid for one..HALF of what I would make anywhere else. Seriously, I bet I am paid lower than any of the nurses here LOL ..I'm griping but I'm stressed, please someone comfort me!

I have LOTS of "other duties as assigned", including (but not limited to) hall monitor, crossing guard, opener of car doors, lunch monitor, tailor, shoe cobbler, eye glass tech, secretary, hazardous waste and hygiene specialist, but never have I been placed all day in a classroom as a substitute teacher. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

I have been a school nurse over a couple of schools. Now I work with school & district nurses in several districts. Never have I seen a nurse pulled to substitute as a teacher. This is a first. I am glad everything has worked out.

Subs don't require teaching degrees in our county. They don't even require a college degree (just 48 credits or a passing grade on Praxis).

I was a substitute teacher in college for 2 different school systems. All that was required was 1 year of college. It was decent pay for not a lot of work at 19.

I'd be interested in hearing how much they pay a substitute teacher for a day of work, and if they're going to cut you a check for that amount for the two days you've already worked as a sub.

LOL of course not! They put me there so they didn't have to pay a sub. I am the lowest on the totem pole here too, on their salary list my job is below bus drivers. I have breakfast duty, lunch duty, after school duty, and they have placed me on every committee in the school. I am head chair of all the wellness committees for the district and I am the lowest paid person on campus. I try to keep my spirits up because the hours are incomparable to any other nursing position but my gosh do they take advantage. There have been many times I come into this school like...NOPE and start job searching when I get home and then I remember the 12 hour shifts, working the holidays, finding a sitter for the summers and all other breaks...and then I come back and suck it up haha. It helps to vent though!

If you're going to sub a class and get sick kids sent to you in the classroom, tell them you expect TWO paycheques for the day.

By the way, do you have a union? Start planning now for the next contract negotiation period. Because as the nurse you are a lone wolf, you have probably escaped everyone's notice. Time to put yourself forward to your representatives and negotiate a better deal for yourself.

You need to consider SPEAKING UP and telling the Principal, nicely but firmly, that you are confused because you thought you had been hired to be a nurse. Add that you are not able to get _____ done when you can't be in your nurse role. And cite privacy issues, too. Express that you understand that perhaps subs aren't available or affordable, but you can't continue to be primarily a sub, not a nurse.

Also that you feel the kids are getting a disservice by having you as their teacher, instead of a trained teacher.

Do you make lesson plans? Curriculum plans?

I guess be prepared to have them get upset with you, maybe fire you. Good luck.
