Any older people in pre-nursing?

Published

i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now! :yeah:

i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.

anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.

people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.

anyone else over 40 like me? :coollook:

Specializes in CNA going for LPN.

Yep! I'm 42 years old and just started general classes a few months ago. I'll be taking Anatomy and Physiology 1, plus English 102 at night for this next Semester.

At first I felt over the hill, but soon realized that a lot of people do crazier things then going back to college at my age..:coollook:

First time (in my late 20s) around I took Medical Secretarial classes, but soon realized I was on the wrong side of Medicine. I did graduate in spite of my husband leaving me 3 weeks before graduation day.

When I was in my early 20s I was too insecure to attempt nursing. Now I'm still scared, but at least I'm doing it! That's the key.

I love anything medical, so it must be my calling. I'm in it for the long hall, so I'd better pass. :banghead:

God bless you.

Specializes in LTC, MDS Cordnator, Mental Health.

I was the oldest in my RN Graduating class, I graduated at 48. I have been a nurse for over year and love every moment of it....

Good luck to you and just focus on one day at a time.

I'm 43 and starting nursing class in the spring. You are never too old to learn or gain strength....and that's just what you've done!! Congrats on gaining strength and courage!!:clphnds:

Great story, ANurseWannaB! I think if you aren't a little scared then you don't have the respect needed to get through with flying colors! I'm a scuba diver, and a dive master recently said to me -- the day he stops being a little nervous before a dive (and during difficult situations during a dive) is the day he knows he should stop because he doesn't respect it enough to ensure his safety. Also studies show that people who are nervous enough to ramp up their studying do much better than those who don't.

Anyway, I'm with you at 44 years old. I'm in my second semester of prereqs and loving it. Congrats for having the courage to pursue what you want to do  -- as far as we know, we only have one go around, and it's a limited amount of time down here! :wink2:

I'm 41. I have a BA and a career I can't wait to change. I'm taking pre-req's now, as my sciences are not acceptable as they are over 10 years old!!! I should have done this years ago too!

We can do it!

Specializes in 0 as RN, 3 in ICU and Tele as Tech.

I'm not that old- I'm 27 but I've been doing pre-reqs since I was 21. I feel like this has been a long time coming and honestly I would rather tackle nursing school with the maturity, assertiveness, and humility that I have now versus what I had then. Even though I have worked in a hospital setting since I was 17 I wasn't ready mentally as I am now. I think it's awesome to see so many people young and matured achieve their dreams. You guys are proof that it's never too late... Can someone please tell my 30 year old husband that :chuckle

I will be about 48 when I graduate NS... thank you for reminding me to focus on 'one day at a time' :wink2:

I go back to this thread quite a bit and read the posts to give me courage and strength. All of you are an inspiration! :D

Thanks again everyone

My fall semester starts tonight and I have butterflies :p

Good luck to you! My fall semester starts Monday. I, too, subscribe to this thread to remind myself that I am not the only one (I'll be an RN in 2010, when I'm 45).:redpinkhe

Just found out I didn't get in this Fall off the alternate list and must reapply for next Fall. I am sad but am applying to more programs this time around. I am 43 and waiting another 9 months to a year seems so long.

I am not giving up though.

I am taking 3 more classes to be competitive in more programs.

When I was younger and concerned about dating an older man, my girlfriend told me:

"Age is a matter of mind, if you don't mind it doesn't matter." :) hmm, Maybe I should make that my signature.

Love that! Keep fighting the good fight -- you'll get in!!

I win the gold medal on this one. Just started pre-nursing this summer semester and had my 64th birthday June.

Bo,

All I can say is you have my admiration...

I have worked with until recently with a RN that is 71 on the med/surg

floor and she is amazing...she is sharp, works out at the rec center 3 x a week, looks wonderful, never stops taking classes at the local college, she has been an inspiration for this ole' 52 yr. old..

She tells me that she is going to keep on working because she truly enjoys

it, so why shouldn't she?

Hang in there!!!!!
