  1. I will be moving to the Riverview area in a couple of months and would like input on what hospitals would be the best to apply at and of course to stay away from. I have worked med/surg and ortho and surgical floors mainly. I am presently in rolled in case management classes. If anyone could please give me any advice, would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Crrn03
  2. I have been reading different postings on case management and thought that you might be able to give me a little insight. I have been a RN for 6 years and am thinking of leaving the bedside and thought of c.m. I enrolled in a class online a Kaplan U. and will get a certificate at the end of a one year class. what tips do you have for me on entering this field. Any info would help. Thanks
  3. I am currently taking an online class with Kaplan U for case management certificate..I so far feel like that I am just reading the same material over and over, but just in a different book. Has anyone out there taken the class or do they have any advise. I know that I need to sit for certification also, correct? I am an RN with an associates, have been a nurse for 6+ years, before that I worked as a MA for 16 years...Please advise as the best route to become a case manager. Thanks
  4. I recently moved to Florida, Sept. actually and what a shocker!!!! The pay does suck, cnas' have 15+ patients a piece, so you are on your own as far as patient care,,You always hear "patient care comes first" but then there is another form that needs filled out..90% charting, 10% patient care...I have really been disappointed in the hospital systems here..
  5. Wow! I am really sorry that OPMC has turned out that way. I worked as a MA for one of the clinics they had when it was Humana Hospital..I worked at Argyle Family Practice, that was in the mid 80s to early 90s...I don't even know if that clinic is still standing....I know the history of the hospital and the Dr. that had alot of imput getting it started, not even sure if he's still alive...definitely dating myself... I really hate to hear that the care has gone down, had surgery there myself and the care was excellent...its a pity crrn:(
  6. Bo, All I can say is you have my admiration... I have worked with until recently with a RN that is 71 on the med/surg floor and she is amazing...she is sharp, works out at the rec center 3 x a week, looks wonderful, never stops taking classes at the local college, she has been an inspiration for this ole' 52 yr. old.. She tells me that she is going to keep on working because she truly enjoys it, so why shouldn't she? Hang in there!!!!! cr:yeah:

:wink2:Thank you so much for all your info. I saw a posting for the sun city Hospice House, but it would be a 50 mile drive from where I am looking to live. I would like to do something like that. I think that I will see what they have to offer around the Orlando area or inbetween Orlando and Lakeland. Any suggestions? Thanks again, crrn2003

Is the Hospice House, a facility that pts go to for palliative care instead of staying at home. Not sure if wording is right, but my ex- mother-in-law went to a facility in Orlando during her last hours, because she did not want to die at home.

thanks for the reply. I will being coming from a rural area and like the atmosphere in the smaller hospitals. I see that you have hospice listed as one of your specialities, I have thought oncology or hospice as a different avenue in nursing. Went to a seminar recently given by a Hospice nurse of about 30 years, very impressed. What do you have to say about getting started in hospice? crrn03

What is the average patient to nurse ratio in the hospitals in Florida? I know that ICU, for example has a lower ratio, but I'm talking about a med/surg floor? I have now anywhere from 6 to 8 patients, and depending on the pt. I feel that is too many,,,,sometimes I feel like I spend 90% charting and 10% with patients...I hate that,,,,,, Just curious,,,if anyone would care to answer that question for me
  13. Good Luck to you!!!!!! I was very nervous at first when I went back to get my RN degree, but I had a supportive family and that helped, but I also was determined to finish, it is amazing what determination can do for you... I worked also in the medical field as a medical assistant for 15 years... Lucky to have worked for a group of internist that were wonderful.. hope to hear in the future how you are doing... crrn03
  14. Hey older age student,,Know how you feel..Went back to school after my children were grown..have been a RN for 5+ years, turn 53 this Aug. I enjoyed the younger students, they didn't treat me any different, had alot of support...GOOD LUCK and just remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel
  15. i am looking to move to florida in the near future and would appreciate any imput as what facilities to stay away from and which ones have a good rep. i am a late bloomer to the nursing profession. went back to school after my children were grown, so i have only been a nurse a little over 5 yrs. i have worked mostly in med/surg,, but at times i have been on the ortho/neuro floor and helped in sds/recovery also. i really would like to get in the oncology nursing field, but every place that i find that is looking for a nurse wants exp. any imput would be much appreciated crrn03
