Need Opinions please.
I am a new RN with 15+ years experience as a probation officer. As a new RN, do you think I would have enough knowledge to be a nurse in a jail setting? Thanks for your replies!

What professional nursing organization do u recommend to join for a newly grad nurse?
You can join the ANA with an online memberhsip for about $45.00. You can also ANA and NY's association at the same site. It is quite pricey though.

Excelsior RN to MSN Program
I just enrolled in Excelsior RN to MSN program. The evaluation of my transcripts was good ( I have a BA degree in an unrelated field) and I feel pretty good about being able to accomplish this goal in 2 years. Anyone else starting or in this program?

New grad needs advice from experience Psyc nurses
I am a new RN licensed grad. I already have a BA in Psychology, and have been a probation officer for 16 years. This week I have two interviews for part time positons. One is in the neurobehavioral unit (advanced dementia) of a hospital/nursing home. The other is for a med/surg position in the same hospital. The psyc is definitely in my comfort zone. On the other hand, I don't want to cheat myself out of needed experience I would get in a med/surg unit. Can some of you more experienced nurses give me some opinions, please?

Need help with what a nurse-initiated intervention can do. Can someone please help me
A nurse initiated function is something nurses can do without a doctor ordering it. For example, if someone is having trouble breathing a nurse can raise the head of the bed to 30 degrees.

From Police Officer To BSN- can it work ?
I'm a female probation officer, going to be 43 this year. Still working full time and getting ready for my 2nd career. I'm in my 2nd semester of an associates degree RN program. Already have a BA in Psychology. I've learned so far, I should keep most of my feelings to myself because I have a VERY different outlook for whiners and pains in the asses (and this includes other students, nurses and patients). I've cleaned up my language and learned to be more tolerant of others. I grit my teeth and do my best and remember that once I get my license, there is a HUGE variety of ways in which I can use it. You'll do fine! Our biggest advantage is that we have dealt with more situations and many more different types of people that most people. Use it to your advantage as maturity wise (and I'm not talking age) and worldly experience wise you will probably be ahead of most people you come in contact with. Good Luck and enjoy school.

Received grades for 1st semester...
Congratulations on your grades! I too work full time and just completed my first semester. I can't wait until Wednesday to see my grades! Have you ever heard that saying "If you want something done give it to a busy person" ? I got done my last clinical on Saturday and started cleaning that night. I'm going to get out my vacuum cleaner again tonight and put the brush attachment on and dust! Congrats!

Question for Livescribe Pen Users
I like the idea of the Livescribe Pen. I am curious to know how, if in anyway, people have put it to use when their instructors use Power Point presentations and Power Point handouts. Thank you in advance!

Is taking a drug test embarrassing?
As a probation officer (and now happpy nursing student ), ANY urine screen we do is observed as we know unless we watch the urine come from the source, it quite possibly is adulturated, or not from the person who is giving the sample. We have seen urine transported in and on people in numerous creative ways (google "whizzinator"). As far as stage fright, our record for stage fright and drinking cups of water (what goes in must come out!) is about 4 hours.

I'm old, no money, depressed..
Life is what you make it. It sounds like you've had a lot of fun along the way, now you have a great opportunity to "grow and grow up" and you have chosen a career to take you there. As you may be starting to realize, you have a great advantage being a mature student. Plus, you have a lot of experience and life experience under your belt. Your are at the beginning of a great journey- enjoy it. I am a 41 year old student. Per Social Security, our age group can not collect fully until age 70. Nursing is a career we could realistically work in at some capacity until then. You'll be fine! Like Pharmgirl said, age is only a number. ENJOY THE JOURNEY!
