i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now!
i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.
anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.
people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.
anyone else over 40 like me?
What made me change? Getting in a rut, doing the same things every day, and WATCHING I LOVE LUCY RERUNS EVERY MORNING. Decided that was really wasting the life I had left.First career: physicist, registered professional engineer, part time calculus & electronics instructor at University.
Second career: 9 year caregiver for wife who had a CVA thanks to Virginia Slims (She has improved enough, thanks to the good Lord, that I can pursue a nursing career--college is 1.1 miles from home!)
Third career: part time neo-natal RN--in about 3 years.
Will be wonderful going home every single evening thinking about the babies and the parents I've helped.

Bo,
Wow....I mean wow... You've got my respect for your past and for going after what you want in life! Those parents and babies in your future will be fortunate to have you........
Hey...there's lots of "us" out there! I am 46 and was just accepted into the Jan 09 Accelerated BSN at Regis in Denver! My background is a degree in Recreation Mgmt and years of personal training and mountain biking. "no medical anything"
I am scared to death but know somehow I will do it because I really want to be a nurse. I am loaded with Math and Science phobias but somehow managed to get good grades all the way through the pre-reqs? There were 2 guys in my A & P classes that were over 60 and going into nursing!
Okay, to be honest, only the big 3-0 is in my immediate future but I wanted to stop in on this thread to say...
you guys are awesome!!!
I wish more folks like you were in some of my classes when I first went back to school. I remember going to the orientation and seeing a sea of...well, kids, who reminded me more of my nieces and nephews than soon-to-be peers. I took night classes as well, which did indeed seem to have a variety of students of all ages and experiences. It was also nice to be treated in kind as an adult by the professors, who appreciated this courtesy more than I can tell you and easily returned the favor. Mostly, I just studied hard and ignored any nonsense. It was said earlier in this thread and it is so true...
'mature' students have the life experience and maturity to make the most of classes with some work and dedication. OP, you'll be just fine.
Best,
Southern
Well looks like 60 would be the queen/king of this thread!:yeah:Gotta get those guys to this site!
For me, I am 46. I have 5 children 15 - 23. Only 1 left at home.
My first degree was BE-EE(Elect Eng). After 8 yrs controlling satellites for the USAF and NASA, I started programming and have been doing that for the past 17 yrs. Although I loved the work, I am tired of getting laid off! All those jobs keep heading to India.
I am hoping for acceptance to the FCCJ nursing school (for RN) during the Summer 09 (night/weekend program). Four back-to-back semesters....all while working FT! It is going to be tough, but I soooooo know it will be worth it when I am done!
Wow, I am so glad that I found this thread! I am 51 and am starting the prerequisites for nursing school. I am going to be applying to the State Tech schools here as well as the 2 yr nursing programs because it is so hard to get in here in Ct. There are more qualified applicants than places in school right now. One article recently said that in Ct they turned away 1000 qualified applicants.
I am also leaning towards the state tech schools because I think the NET entrance exam will be easier since I will not be finished with all my math courses in time to take the 2 yr entrance exam.
This fall I am taking Biology and a math course. Next semester will do my English and Psych, plus another Math.
It is great to see others who are just starting out too!

:yeah:WOW! That is really awesome!!! Right now I'm brushing up on the skills I'll need to pass the TEAS.
I think change is good you know? We mom's have raised our kids (Well almost my youngest is 14) and now we want to do something more, just for us.
I've always liked being a CNA in past years, so I'm hoping I can be a really good and caring nurse.
You all are so awesome, thanks for the boost when I start to wonder if I'm doing the right thing and kinda down on myself about being older and going back to school.
Hi everybody! I am a 40 y.o. divorced mother of 5. This is my 3rd semester. I just started A & P I. In my school all of the sciences must be taken consecutively. So if all goes well and as planned then I will begin Nurs. school in Fall '09. My school is full of us "non-traditionals" and there has been a quite a few of us in all of the classes that I have taken. Sometimes we're even the majority, like in A & P.
Like another poster said, your never too old to learn and I'm actually enjoying school this time around!
hey everyone. i am 46 and starting my pre reqs. i think i am the oldest person in my class. but thats ok. i will be around 50 when i am finally an rn. i figure that still gives me 15 or 20 years of working in the field that i have always wanted to be in. hang in there.....
wow, that's the same thing i was thinking! i first thought about just going for the lpn, but most ppl who have the lpn behind them go for the rn anyway...so that's what i'm thinking at this point...just do it all now and be done with school and do something i wanted to do since i was a kid.
glad to know you're going for your rn, that's so awesome and i wish you the best in all you do!
