i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now!
i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.
anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.
people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.
anyone else over 40 like me?
Good Day,
I'm 35 years old, this will be my second degree too. I'm scared but, you only live once. I've been in the USAF for 12 years and i haven't even touch my MGIB. They have a program for nursing and i jump at it!! They will pay for me to go to school free. Well i will retire as a officer.
So, now three kids later 15 thru 1 years of age. i'm going to follow my 1st love:heartbeat Nursing. I had to take all of science courses over again. But, that's all i have to take 4 classes. i just hope i don't deploy to Iraq nexts year.
I'm a 42 year old single working dad... I'm loving college as an adult, other than being broke! I think you get more out of school at this age... although it's inspiring to study with young people that are truly motivated. If all goes well I'll be job hunting at about 45...Steve
Congrats on the motivations!!! Isn't that the truth about appreciating school at an older age but being inspired by the youth. I'm amazed by the ones that can "text" during class but absorb the lectures anway... I've been accepted much better than I'd dreamed by the "youngens!" Hang in there Steve, to a dedicated working Dad, and we will all be job hunting before we know it...........
I just turned 41 in May:eek:. I have taken all of my classes so far online. Tuesday is my first "In class" lecture. I am also taking Biology. I thought I should take that in a class-room setting in case I find it difficult. I am taking my Government class on-line. Yes...I am alittle worried that I will feel out of place, but I am so excited, I am TRYING not to worry. Hey...since we're taking the same class, if you need a "study buddy", I'm here!!! Don't worry, there are alot of us in the same boat. We'll get through it! :wink2:

i'm 46 and i'm thinking about going to ivy tech in february. actually, it's more than thinking as i'm brushing up for the teas
i have to admit, i'm sort of scared going back to school after so many years of being a stay at home mom. i've raised my two sons and now i feel it's time for me to do something just for me. (hope that makes sense) i want to excel in my nursing classes, i hate to fail, so i'm just trying to stay very positive and have faith in myself that i can do this.

you probably will be scared now but just wait until you've had a couple of classes..you'll wonder why you were ever concerned.
prof says several times in class and in sylabus "come with a blue book and a scantron card." about 20% came empty.
one guy never took notes and didn't have a book.
the gal next to me was so busy doing her nails she was on the wrong chapter in the book. :chuckle
i took a review crash course in biology this summer and after a 2 hr lecture on the metric system the prof asked a student who had been texting the whole two hours how much she weighed in the metric system. her answer was 50 liters!!!
he got in her face, said if you'd been paying the least bit of attention and not texting, you'd know weight is measured in kg. he took her cell phone away from her and sat it on the front counter where he said you can get if after class. this isn't high school, start acting grown up, people's lives may depend on you in a few years. she'll never forget that experience the rest of her life and she'll know what a kg is.
i think a lot of 20 year olds are running on hormones just like i was at that age and most of the blood is going below the belt line and just a little to the brain.
if i'm hospitalized i want the older nurse, male or female even if they just graduated, and not the 20 something taking care of me or my family.:redbeathe
the two top scores in the psychology class this summer were by the two oldest students.
why not drop by the college bookstore and find out what book you will use for your first class. then go to amazon and buy and older edition and start being a top student before you even enroll? i got an older human anatomy textbook for $37 from amazon and the latest version in the bookstore is $207. half price books has some good prices too.

Thank so much Bo, I feel so much better now after reading your post.
It's my plan right now hitting the books just to brush up for my TEAS. Since I've been out of school since 1980, I'll need to really hit it hard.
Ivy Tech where I'll be going require 80% in reading, 60% in math, 60% in science and 70% in english just to get into the nursing program.
I know if I put my mind to it, I can do anything I want. I just want to do the best job I can you know?
I mean after I do leave school, one mistake and it could cost someone his/her life and that does bother me. This is not a time for fooling around like the girl you talked about in your post. That's just being stupid...period!
Anyway, thanks so much for your kind words.....

Bo,
You inspire me!! I start my nursing classes in the spring and find you awe inspiring!! When I told my Dad that I was going back to school, he told me that I was too old. :grn: He ALWAYS thought he was too old to better himself and fortunately I never listened to him!! Keep up the hard work!!!:anpom:
