i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now!
i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.
anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.
people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.
anyone else over 40 like me?
One of the positive parts I enjoy about being a non-traditional is the influence we have can have on the younger students. A young 19 year old student told me that she enjoyed being with us (myself and another lady a couple of years younger than me.) She said it made her want to work harder on her grades and not "goof off" during class. Now the 19 year old student is in nursing school this fall with that friend of mine and is "stuck like glue" to her....and I admire her for wanting to succeed!
wow, that's the same thing i was thinking! i first thought about just going for the lpn, but most ppl who have the lpn behind them go for the rn anyway...so that's what i'm thinking at this point...just do it all now and be done with school and do something i wanted to do since i was a kid.glad to know you're going for your rn, that's so awesome and i wish you the best in all you do!
my human psychology prof is doing research on gpa vs age on all the rn students at the local community college. research isn't completed yet but she said the two highest grades in the psyc class this summer were from the two oldest students. (and i'm the oldest).
i really didn't like the class at all so it is amazing. things like dr xy has done research indicating that children learn from each other. wow--any parent or teacher knows that but dr xy has his picture in the text book indicating his brilliance with the research. you may all genuflect now.

Good morning fellow pre-nursing students!
I too am an older student...actually I am quite a bit older...I am 52 and still have three of my pre-regs to get thru. I start BIO 201 in about an hour (I am a little nervous)
Nursing has been something I have always wanted to pursue and I am finally going for it!!
Say a prayer for me...
Thank you for all of the encouragement..this sight it partly why I have the courage to get this going
Well, I'm don't feel old but I'm most definitely older than a few of my classmates. I'm 30 and I have a BA in English. I'm back in school because no matter what I told myself during my dull office jobs, I always knew in my heart that I want to be a nurse. So now I'm back in school and I'm having a lot of fun. I'm a better student now than my first time in college though (due to the fact that I'm no longer in school to party, my behavior now actually affects my future, etc.).
I really admire the older ladies in my class. Whenever I feel like it's too late for me, I look at them and realize that if they can do it, then so can I.
I agree with you, when I was in school, I didn't care about learning at all. It was more important to focus on football games and where we would go to after the big game. I really blew it for myself, but managed to grow up just a bit with A's in my last 2 years of high school.
Now, I'm faced with the price I have to pay for having a good time when I was younger because I have to begin all over and relearn things that I should have paid attention to. I know that my compass test will be a huge joke, since I've been out of school since 1980. Plus you add in the fact I pretty much goofed around all but 2 years of my entire schooling when I was younger, and I'm sure I'll have to take a lot of classes just to get to my pre-reqs.
I rode my 2 boy's about the importance of school and what will happen if you goof off. My oldest did a great job in school and has a wonderful job making really good money for himself and his family.
My youngest is 14 and has Asperger's, but he made the Honor Society last year. He had all A's and B's during the school year. Good to know I taught my 2 boys not to follow in my footsteps!
I think when you're older, you're more focused on what's important in your life. Now, I'm going after something I've wanted since I was a kid...... I know I can do it!
I had to laugh when I saw your post...not at you of course! I thought for one second, "Did I post that"? I'm 44 yrs old and I am taking Human growth & development along with Anatomy and Physiology I here at the local college in my town. The same exact thoughts ran through my head when I signed up for classes; I think I was more nervous walking to my 1st class last week, than when I was 18. My plan is to try to get accepted into the nursing program in Fall '09. I am just going to take this one test at a time. I want this more than anything. I got my BS in Foods & Nutrition back in '87 so some of my credits will transfer. yea! I wish all the best ...just remember to breathe!!! And remember...we are NOT old, we are VINTAGE! Like fine wine! ~ Full of wisdom & life experiences! You are going to be great! Good Luck to you!!!

lol, yup we're like fine wine, i like that~! i just hope i don't pop my cork while i'm taking these classes :chuckle
i'm going to take my compass on wednesday and take it from there. i guess i'm thinking along the lines as you, just take it one class, one step at a time and things will go as smooth as butter.
i found myself thinking about having to take 'extra' classes where i'm the weakest, but now i realize it's going to take me where i want to be in the end, so why stress over it. i'm hoping i can take most of the classes online so i can still hold down the fort at home.

You're only as old as you feel and on a good day I'm like 21~! :clown:
Don't even ask about the bad days... but I'm sure Boris Karloff would have taken the role.

I currently have a BA in education, a field that is literally saturated in Michigan. After not being able to find a job in education and doing some soul searching, I am going back to school for a second degree-nursing (LPN), at the age of 39. Raising children and going to school is not easy. I have lived by your words "I must believe in myself". Though it is HARD to do at times, always look to the future and in achieving that goal. Time goes by fast and before you know it, you'll be graduating and so thankful that you stuck with it. :wink2:
