i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now!
i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.
anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.
people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.
anyone else over 40 like me?
Hi again!
I agree...there is a lot of satisfaction in going back to school when you are older. Although from some of the messages I've read, some of the younger students don't sound like they are very serious about their education (NOT judging but any means..I was 18 once too & had a blast in college*wine ) The kids in my A& P class mean business! I expected it to be like everyone is talking about, but it isn't at all! The girl beside me is taking a semester off from Baylor U. and wanted to take a science class to keep her brain "well tuned"....She wants to be a Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon. Oh! Did I mention that she has already taken A & P ...yeah, she taking it again for kicks & grins. These kids are serious. No one goofs off. I am very impressed with these young people. Having said that, they kind of scare me too because they are so smart and they just had all of their biologies & chemistry classes....and its been 21 some odd years for me. And these are the kids that I am up against when I apply to the nursung program!!! Last term there were 200 applicants & they only took 54 candidates. YIKES!
We are having our 1st lab exam this Tues. and there is SO SO SO much info on it. I think I have become one with my text!!! I have made flashcards...I have bought the A & P coloring book...I have made posters....I have prayed until my poor little knees are raw!!! I am so nervous that I think my insides are turning in on themselves....OMG! I'm ranting! Please tell me that you live through this & that it WILL get easier?! I want this so much...I can stinkin' taste it! I know that there is someone out there who understands. I should go...gotta get up early. Good Luck to you all! I think we ROCK!
Im currently 40 and will be 42 when I graduate. And to add a martini twist to returning to college after 12 years, I walked away from decent paying job to do it too. We have a classmate who is 60 year old entering n-school.
The way I see it, we've got too many years, tears and fight left to be put out to pasture. You stay young by keeping your mind active and that includes school. Do your thing! With the way things are going with social security & pensions, we're likely to be working well into our 70s :chuckle
Hello
I am 40 and just starting out so you are not alone you cna emial me anytime here on the boards Ia m laurie01 Good Luck I am so nervous abotu this but what the hek I ahve my four kids and my husband to help so I think I will be ok at least you have college behind IA m coming in with a GED that Ia m getting in Sept of this year so you are doing better than me but Ia m doing it too lol:)
After a week in BIO 201 I realized that I was in over my head...(MY last science class was in the 70's) I will start over with BIO 187 in the Spring...I am a little discouraged, but It is important and I want to get it right...But I just pushed everything back a year
I am beginning to wonder about the fast track program at Gateway...any input?
Thanks
I just wanted to say that it is possible and to keep your focus. I graduated in May at the age of 41. I have since turned 42 in August. I started my pre-req's in the spring of 2005. It was an extremely challenging 3.5 yrs. I pretty much gave up my life as I knew it for those 3.5 yrs. My husband and 4 boys rarely saw me but they supported me all the way. I graduated with honors and received a $1000 scholarship that only 3 students in Texas receive, made Phi Theta Kappa, and Psi Beta, and I was on the board of our ADNSO.
But even without all the awards (which once you graduate they really don't mean a thing other than personal pride) being a nurse is so rewarding! Keep your focus... it's all worth it!! and welcoem to the wonderful world of nursing!!!
30 yo here. I feel I could be half of my classmates father..I also went back to the community school i graduated from 10 years ago...and I think that shocked me even more (It's like going back in time).
Taking physchology and A&P I, and lab...I salute everyone here!! and I wish everyone the best of luck!!

I'm 38 and am taking pre-nursing classes. I am doing an RN/BSN/MSN program, so by the time I finish all of that I'll be in my early 40s.
No worries; we only get better as the years go by!
