Any older people in pre-nursing?

Published

i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now! :yeah:

i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.

anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.

people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.

anyone else over 40 like me? :coollook:

I'm 37 and will be be over 40 by the time I graduate. There are days I wonder if I made the right decision, or wonder if I will ever get the priviledge of seeing RN behind my name. Whenever I feel that way I just look at my 2 beautiful daughters and think of the wonderful example I'm setting for them. When I feel discouraged, which is often, I tell myself that it will all be worth it in the end, and that I'm sending a message to my girls that they can be and do anything they put their minds to no matter what the age. It's hard sometimes not to focus on the fact that most of the girls in my classes are just that.....GIRLS! But as older students we have the advantage of maturity and life experience. Not only that but I find that I actually APPRECIATE my education now far more than I did when I was in my 20's. WE ROCK, and we'll make awesome nurses!!!! :nurse:

I know 2 women whose Moms went to nursing schools in their 30s or 40s. Both of those women have told me how much they admire their Mom and how they felt she set a great example for them! So, you're right about setting a good example for your daughters. :)

Doesn't sound like a very good friend.....YOU CAN DO IT!! There are many of us out there just like you!:D

Check out Clovis.edu for online prereq's. They are accepted here in Ct; I checked. You can do some of your prereq's for alot less money than we can do them here - and work on them when your kids are asleep etc. In Ct one course would cost me about $450 - at clovis.edu (Clovis Community College in New Mexico) it cost me about $200. Good luck!

What is the name of that community college and do they have a website???

40ish is nothing, try 50ish! Age is a state of mind; just carry on...

I'm 30 and I don't consider myself "older" but I am a lot older than a ot of the people who I took my pre-reqs with!!! LOL!

There is a man in my classes who is 54 and is just now getting his RN/ADN....he is wonderful. I think it is spectacular when "older" peple go back to school to persue a dream!!!

GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, yeah, and my mom is also 54 and is going back to school for Radiation Tech!!

I'm 44 almost 45 and I'm just at the end of my pre-req's. Would have gone faster except I graduated college 20 years ago so I had to do the beginning chem and bio before jumping into A&P and Micro.

I have to take a Pre-admissions test next Saturday. Not to bad except I only found out I was required to take it a week ago. The admission requirements were changed as of July 1 and I hadn't realized it.....AHHHH

I just graduated at 32 and there were a lot of people in their 30s. But the oldest person in our program had a son that was finishing up his surgical residency. I never asked how old she was but for the son if you think 22 to get a bachelor's, 26 to finish medical school, and surgical residency of 7 years....

yep....i'm doing it at 41! i'm doing some of the prereqs at fordham university this semester and will transfer into the college of new rochelle for the spring and will be there until i complete my bsn. then, i'm thinking about enlisting in the air force after that. you can enlist as an officer with a degree and you have until age 47. by the time i finish at cnr, i'll be 43 by then and still young enough to strut!!!

i'm 48 and will be 51 after graduating from nursing. i'm hoping to get in the rn program for next fall. i'm taking micro and human growth & development this semester and these are my last two pre-reqs. i have always wanted to be a nurse but didn't follow through when i was younger; i could kick myself for that now.

good luck to everyone!
